In this lesson, students look at job interviews. They first learn vocabulary related to this professional scenario. They then read the text about four different interview questions and the best way to answer them. After studying some of the language used, the students listen to two interviews, one that is going badly and one that is going well. They go on to do further practice by answering job interview questions. Finally, they discuss the usefulness of job interviews and are asked to write the script for a successful interview. AUDIO TRANSCRIPTS
Audio 1 (Exercise 5 - Part A)
Interviewer: So Gregory, could you tell me why you would like to work for Blue Comet?
Gregory: Well, I need a job, and you need someone for the job! It’s perfect! [laughs] Seriously now, I think I am a great leader, and so I would fit in very well here as a manager.
Interviewer: I see. Could you describe a situation in which you led your team to a successful outcome?
Gregory: Um, not off the top of my head, but I’m sure any member of my team would say I’m a born leader. That’s because I… [Volume goes down]
Interviewer: May I ask you what your main weakness is?
Gregory: Of course, I knew this one was coming! [laughs]. I believe I am too much of a perfectionist. I need to make sure all the boxes are ticked, you know, making sure to dot the i’s and cross the t’s so that my work is perfect. I would say that is… [Volume goes down]
Interviewer: Thank you very much for your time answering all our questions, Gregory. Before we finish, do you have any questions for us?
Gregory: No, I don’t think so, I think the job description was pretty detailed. Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you again soon!
Audio 2 (Exercise 5 - Part B)
Interviewer: So Gregory, could you tell me why you would like to work for Blue Comet?
Gregory: Well, when I saw the job description for the role of Senior Manager at Blue Comet, I knew I had to apply. The skills required are similar to the ones in my current job, as I have managed a team of fifteen people for the past five years now. I am fully aware that this role is at a higher level than the one I currently have, but with my experience, I am eager to face this new challenge. Blue Comet is a well-established company with a great work culture, as I have seen from the awards you have received over the past couple of years. For this reason, I think it is the ideal place to develop my career and… [Volume goes down]
Interviewer: May I ask you what your main weakness is?
Gregory: I believe an area of improvement for me is getting too attached to details in projects. I definitely want to do the best job I possibly can and sometimes this can lead to focusing too much on tiny things. However, I have been trying to improve this by making a conscious effort to look at the bigger picture. Little things such as leaving notes for myself have been quite helpful and I’ve also started reading this great book called… [Volume goes down]
Interviewer: Thank you very much for your time answering all our questions, Gregory. Before we finish, do you have any questions for us?
Gregory: Thank you for your time, I appreciate it. I do have a few questions if you don’t mind. I have seen that the company offers educational opportunities and I was wondering how that works…
