In this lesson on comic superhero characters, students develop their language and skills by learning about The Avengers. They begin by discussing the five original hero members. The students identify key vocabulary before listening to a short introduction and completing comprehension question tasks. They read character profiles and locate key information before noticing the use of comparative adjectives. They then practice the adjectives in a variety of written and spoken activities. There is an additional speaking task for students to personalize the language. (by Vicky Aitken)

Note: This lesson is based on the original 1963 Marvel comic book lineup of the Avengers, which may differ from the team members featured in the modern movies.

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker: Loki, the god of mischief, was always using his powers to trick people. After losing a fight with his brother, Thor, he wanted to get back at him and hurt him. One day, he made it look like the Hulk had tried to destroy a passenger train because he wanted Thor and the Hulk to fight. But Hulk’s friends sent out a danger signal. Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Thor himself all came to help. The heroes worked together as a team to stop Loki, and this was the beginning of the Avengers. They all agreed to stay together as a powerful force of good. Over time, more superheroes joined the team – heroes like Captain America, Spider-Man and many more. The Avengers team has changed many times, but they have always worked together to help people.
