In this lesson about comic characters, students develop their skills and language by learning about Captain America. To engage with the topic, they first discuss a set of pictures and general questions. Then they learn and practice key vocabulary before listening to part of the story about how Steve Rogers became Captain America. They then listen to the second part of the story and complete tasks to understand his journey. There is a post-vocabulary task, as well as a focus on character qualities. Students finish by responding to the story in an interactive speaking activity. There is an additional writing task which allows them to personalize the topic. (by Vicky Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPTS
Audio 1 - Part 1
Speaker: Steve Rogers went from a small, weak boy to a very strong man. How did he become Captain America, a national hero, a leader, and a person who shows what is good and fair?
Steve Rogers grew up poor in Brooklyn, New York. Because of his small physical appearance and health problems, he was often bullied by nasty boys, but he stayed strong inside. When they laughed at him and pushed him to the ground, he always got back up again. He always did what was right and always looked after other people, even when he didn’t feel brave.
When World War II started in 1939, he wanted to help out, so he signed up to join the army, but he was turned down many times, because he wasn’t strong or big enough. At the same time, Professor Abraham Erskine was working on a secret military project called Project Rebirth, which involved developing a superhuman soldier for the United States. He thought Steve would be a good choice for the experiment, because of his strong character. Steve took a special serum, and it was very successful.
Audio 2 - Part 2
Speaker: He changed into a super soldier with amazing strength and power. They decided to call him Captain America, and he became a hero for the American people during the war, showing strength, bravery and kindness. He was given a large shield, which protects him and others. Unfortunately, Dr. Erskine was killed by the enemy, and the last of the serum was destroyed, making Steve Rogers the one and only super soldier.
During the war, Captain America had a good friend called Bucky, and they both fought with a group called the Invaders. As the war was coming to an end in 1945, there was a terrible airline crash, and everybody thought Captain America and Bucky had died in the explosion.
Many years later, Captain America’s body was found buried in ice. The serum he received slowed down the aging process, allowing him to survive in ice. He came back to life and became one of the leading members of the Avengers.
