I’ll be there for you

BE THERE FOR SOMEONE
O que significa essa expressão em INGLÊS
ENGLISH AUDIO

A dica deste post é uma expressão muito comum no Inglês do dia a dia: be there for someone. Ela aparece bastante em conversas sobre amizade, família, relacionamentos e momentos difíceis da vida. Se olharmos as palavras literalmente, be there significa 'estar lá'. Mas quando dizemos be there for someone, a ideia vai muito além de simplesmente estar em um lugar físico. Na Língua Inglesa, a expressão transmite o sentido de dar apoio, oferecer ajuda, estar presente emocionalmente quando alguém precisa.

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker: What if we could turn back the clock and reverse aging?
A small start-up from Boston, USA, has begun clinical trials on a new type of treatment known as “reprogramming” after winning approval from the FDA. The study will see a therapy known as ER-100 given to people suffering from eye disease, in an attempt to reverse damage and restore sight in extreme cases.
The company, Life Biosciences, will use the trials to evaluate the safety of the treatment, which will be delivered with the help of a modified virus. The technique aims to bring cells back to a healthier state by resetting gene switches known as epigenetic controls.
Life Biosciences was co-founded by David Sinclair, a professor and advocate for rejuvenation technology such as reprogramming. Sinclair has gained a following within the longevity community through his books and YouTube channel, in which he offers tips on how to beat old age.
Critics have said that Sinclair tends to exaggerate scientific progress in the field, and some have accused him of using his position to sell unproven anti-aging supplements. Sinclair stepped down from heading the Academy of Health and Lifespan Research in 2024.
Reprogramming has seen a surge of interest in recent years, with investors funding a variety of companies in an attempt to find that most elusive of breakthroughs: eternal youth. However, the technology is not without risk.
Activating gene switches in living animals can cause tumors, leading to scientists considering a new idea: partial reprogramming. New approaches limit exposure to the powerful genes, or only use a small amount of them.
Life Biosciences has taken this concept one step further by focusing on the human eye, with their ER-100 therapy activated only while patients take a low dose of an antibiotic, meaning that any side effects should be easier to spot and control.
Competitors aren’t quite ready for human trials, with New Limit, a company founded by a cryptocurrency boss, saying that they are two years away from testing on people.
Daniel Ives from Shift Bioscience, which is just starting animal testing, pointed out that the eye is a “nice self-contained system” and that, if something should go wrong, “you’ve still got one left”.

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Candidate 1: For me, it’s all about the interactions you have with your co-workers and the customers. If you can build positive relationships, then even when there is a difficult challenge, you can work together and be successful. However, if there is tension, then teamwork is going to be difficult. Even in jobs where you need to be self-motivated and may generally work alone, you still need to be able to consult with colleagues and share information as otherwise, you may independently be working on the same kind of problem which slows you down and wastes time. So even then, communication and positive relationships are key to being successful and working effectively.
Candidate 2: After I left university, I worked in sales jobs for a while which I thought would be ideal for getting experience of people and making some money, but to be honest, I felt like I didn’t have the skills for it. I found the job quite repetitive, and I was saying the same things to different people every day. I used to go home and mess around on my computer which is when I started being interested in writing computer programs because it’s about solving problems which I like. So I went to an evening class while I was in sales and learned much more about it. The teacher knew someone who was looking for a part-time programmer, so I started working for them at the weekends until I’d got enough experience to go full time. Now I plan to take that further by getting work with a larger company.
Candidate 3: It’s quite a dynamic workplace. We all work independently, but we are still a team. I don’t think a day goes by without someone asking the team if they have any experience of a particular problem, which someone nearly always does and when that happens, we will all look at it together as, who knows? Maybe we will have the same difficulty later on? So there’s a genuine interest in finding a solution. Our manager brings us together at the start of each week and she brings in coffee and cakes, and we each talk about what we’re working on, just so that we’re aware of each other’s projects. She’s also quick to say what a good job everyone is doing which I think really increases everyone’s confidence in their abilities. We often go out together for a drink after work, probably two or three times a month, so I count my colleagues as friends as well as co-workers.
