This lesson looks at different types of signs and the language that is used when talking about them. Students will look at signs that you would see in different places and learn how to describe what the sign says in English. The language focus will look at modal verbs of permission and the students will get the chance to personalize and practice this language in the final task (by Peter Clarkin).

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Person A: Hello everyone and thank you for coming today. We hope you all have a great time while you are here, but we just have a few rules that we would like you to follow when you are here. Number 1 is that the floor can get very slippery so you shouldn't run. Number 2 is that you can’t smoke in this building and number 3 is that the water is not deep so you can’t dive or you could hurt yourself. (swimming pool)
Person B: Isn’t it strange that this place has so many rules? Some of them I understand, like the one about throwing your trash on the ground, I know you can’t do that. But what about the one about dogs? You may not bring your dog here? That really isn’t fair because I know my puppy, Barbara, would love to run about here. Also, I used to love having a beer here on a Sunday afternoon and now I can't do that! (park)
Person C: The people over there are so rude. I’m trying to read these books before my exam tomorrow, but they keep on talking. The sign over there says they must be quiet, but they are still so noisy. Also, they dropped their juice on those Harry Potter books even though we can't eat or drink in here. I know that we can use our phones in here, but they must be on silent, theirs have been ringing all afternoon. (library)
