This lesson looks at the recent news that Princess Kate has been diagnosed with cancer. There is a listening exercise in the form of a news bulletin, in which students will learn key vocabulary and answer questions. This is followed by a short text about the power and purpose of the UK’s Royal Family. The accompanying exercise requires students to transform verbs into nouns. There is then a reading comprehension about the media pressure that surrounds the Royal Family. There are discussion points, and the opportunity to practice the vocabulary in a short writing task (by Joey Vaughan-Birch).

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Newsreader: Good evening, and welcome to the news at seven o’clock. The big story tonight: Kate Middleton is being treated for cancer. In a video, she explained that she went to hospital in January because she had a problem in her stomach. Doctors found it when they saw her. She is starting chemotherapy to stop it becoming worse.
Her husband, Prince William, praised her bravery and King Charles said he is very proud of her. She has not been seen since Christmas, and some people started rumors about her. She wanted time to talk to her children, and help them to understand that she would get better.
Sometimes, there is a lot of pressure on the Royal Family because people want to know everything about them. Many politicians think they need more protection. She says she is getting stronger, and she hopes to work again soon. She also sent love to others who have cancer, saying, “For everyone facing this disease...You are not alone.” She has received support from lots of people around the world who want her to recover.
