In this updated lesson, students talk about travel plans. They first respond to the topic before learning and practicing airport vocabulary. They then listen to three people in a departure lounge talking about their travel plans. Using the conversation, the students notice the use, form, and pronunciation of going to. After practicing the language in a variety of activities, the students finish with a productive task in which they describe their travel plans. (by Victoria Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker 1: Are you both waiting for the flight to New York too?
Speaker 2: No, I’m flying to Hawaii.
Speaker 1: How exotic. Are you going on vacation?
Speaker 2: Kind of, my sister lives there so I’m going to visit her and have a bit of a vacation at the same time.
Speaker 3 (female): You are lucky, my sister lives in Alaska. Are you going to try surfing? It’s very popular.
Speaker 2: Yes, my sister surfs, but it’s far too energetic for me. I’m going to do a lot of relaxing on the beach.
Speaker 1: What about you? Where are you going?
Speaker 3: Costa Rica.
Speaker 2: For a vacation?
Speaker 3: No, I’m going to do some volunteering in the jungle.
Speaker 1: That sounds adventurous. Where are you going to stay?
Speaker 3: In a tree house. I can’t wait.
Speaker 2: Wow, that’s brave. I would be too scared of the insects. How long are you going to stay?
Speaker 3: I’m going to stay for a month in the jungle and then I’m going to travel to the beach and spend one week there relaxing.
Speaker 1: That sounds like a good plan.
Speaker 2: Why are you going to New York?
Speaker 1: I’m going to attend a work conference. It’s not as exciting as your plans, but I’m excited to see New York. I have two days free afterwards, so I’m going to see a show and visit some galleries.
Speaker 2: New York is an amazing city. You are going to love it.
Airport announcement: Flight number AV456 to Costa Rica is now boarding at gate number six. Please make your way to the gate. Have your boarding pass ready.
Speaker 3: Oh, that’s me. It was so nice to meet you both. Have a great time in Hawaii, and I hope your work conference goes well. Bye!
Speaker 1: You too, have a great time.
Speaker 2: Bye, take good care.
