In this lesson, we’ll be looking at the power of cultural diversity. Students will watch and discuss a short video on the topic, then read a text about the latest census in the UK and the emergence of super-diverse British cities. They will then listen to five immigrants talking about their experience in the UK, and finally discuss the topic with their classmates. If you have some extra time left, there’s also a task on the listening script and a role-play interview. (by Edward Alden)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT
Speaker 1: I’m from India and I arrived in Manchester 20 years ago to work in IT. I worked in a computer shop at the time, but now I have my own company. Most of the businesses here have employees from lots of different countries, which is good, even though some people don’t think so. That’s why we need to talk more about the situation: I think some people don’t like immigrants because they just don’t have enough information.
Speaker 2: I had to leave my country, Uganda because of the war there and came here to Leicester. It wasn’t easy at first because I didn’t have qualifications, but I managed to get a job as a cleaner. 15 years later, I’m still at the same company, but now I work as a manager. I also spend some of my free time helping people that arrive in the country.
Speaker 3: I’m a math teacher, and about six years ago, I moved from Scotland because I met someone here in Manchester. We’re not together anymore, but I stayed because I love it here. In other big cities, different national groups often stay in separate neighborhoods, but here you can walk down any street and hear lots of different languages.
Speaker 4: When Brexit happened, I was already living in Birmingham. I had moved from Poland a few years before, so it was easy to apply to stay here. Many people I know went back to their countries because they didn’t feel welcome anymore. But I decided to stay because I really like it here and they need nurses like me.
Speaker 5: I moved from Spain to Leicester because I married a British man. I was a receptionist in my country, so I found a job at a hotel here quickly. Most of the people who work with me are also foreigners, which I think is a good thing for any company, but especially in tourism.
