In this updated lesson plan, students consider cultural stereotypes relating to a range of countries by listening to the beginning of a short lecture. The language point relates to adverbs of manner and there are practice exercises and speaking activities as well as an optional extension relating to commonly confused adverbs. Amelia Carter: Hello everyone! In today’s talk, I’m asking the question, are stereotypes useful? To begin, I’m going to look at stereotypes for three countries. Listen to these stereotypes and try to guess which countries I’m talking about.
In our first country, people are famous for giving guests a warm welcome. In fact, they are polite to everyone, not just visitors. They speak quietly and keep their homes, offices and public places very clean. It’s important to them to do everything correctly, so if they think they speak English badly, they will try not to talk to British or American tourists.
The second country I’m going to describe welcomes many, many visitors every year. It can be hard to understand the people because they speak very quickly but many of them speak English well, so this isn’t a problem. Most people take a daily nap for a few hours in the afternoon and then eat dinner late.
People in our third country are said to drive dangerously and shout loudly at other cars. For this reason, you should cross the road carefully. They are very proud of their country’s history. The food here is healthy and delicious.
Now, you may not agree with these stereotypes, but are stereotypes useful? Some people think that they help us understand the world. However, they can also be dangerous. For example...
