SAY, TELL, SPEAK, TALK:

Qual a diferença?

Você sabe a diferença entre os verbos “say”, “tell”, “speak” e “talk”? Eles são muito parecidos, mas são usados de maneiras diferentes. Vamos aprender com vários exemplos traduzidos e contextualizados.

Vamos aprender com vários exemplos em Inglês, com suas respectivas traduções em Português, a diferença entre os verbos say, tell, speak e talk.

SAY

Say é “dizer” no sentido de pronunciar ou proferir palavras.

• She says the answer is correct. (Ela diz que a resposta está correta.)
• I’m saying this because it’s important. (Estou dizendo isso porque é importante.)
• They’ve said it many times before. (Eles disseram isso muitas vezes antes.)
• He said he’d come to the party. (Ele disse que viria à festa.)
• While we were talking, she said something unexpected. (Enquanto estávamos conversando, ela disse algo inesperado.)
• Before I left, she’d already said goodbye. (Antes de eu sair, ela já tinha dito adeus.)
• They’ll say the final decision tomorrow. (Eles dirão a decisão final amanhã.)
• At 3 PM tomorrow, he’ll be saying his farewell speech. (Às 3 da tarde amanhã, ele dirá seu discurso de despedida.)
• By the time you arrive, I’ll have already said everything. (Quando você chegar, eu já terei dito tudo.)
• If he were here, he’d say the same thing. (Se ele estivesse aqui, ele diria a mesma coisa.)

TELL

Tell é “contar [algo] a alguém”.

• She tells interesting stories to her children. (Ela conta histórias interessantes para seus filhos.)
• I am telling you the truth. (Eu estou te contando a verdade.)
• They have told us about their travel experiences. (Eles nos contaram sobre suas experiências de viagem.)
• He told me about his new job yesterday. (Ele me contou sobre o novo emprego dele ontem.)
• While we were at the party, she was telling jokes. (Enquanto estávamos na festa, ela estava contando piadas.)
• By the time I arrived, they had already told the news to everyone. (Quando cheguei, eles já tinham contado a notícia para todos.)
• She will tell you the details later. (Ela vai te contar os detalhes mais tarde.)
• At this time tomorrow, they will be telling their story to the media. (A essa hora amanhã, eles contarão a história deles para a mídia.)
• By the end of the week, he will have told us everything. (Até o final da semana, ele nos terá contado tudo.)
• If you had asked, I would have told you the answer. (Se você tivesse perguntado, eu teria te contado a resposta.)

SPEAK

Speak é “falar”, tipo um idioma, ou falar com alguém.

• She speaks Spanish fluently. (Ela fala Espanhol fluentemente.)
• I’m speaking with the manager right now. (Eu estou falando com o gerente agora.)
• They’ve spoken about this issue before. (Eles já falaram sobre esse problema antes.)
• He spoke at the conference yesterday. (Ele falou na conferência ontem.)
• While I was speaking, the phone rang. (Enquanto eu falava, o telefone tocou.)
• She’ll speak at the event next week. (Ela falará no evento na próxima semana.)
• At this time tomorrow, they’ll be speaking with the client. (A essa hora amanhã, eles falarão com o cliente.)
• We’ve been speaking for hours. (Nós estamos falando há horas.)
• If he spoke to me, I would understand. (Se ele falasse comigo, eu entenderia.)
• Before the meeting, they had spoken about the agenda. (Antes da reunião, eles tinham falado sobre a pauta.)

TALK

Talk é “conversar”, “bater papo” e envolve basicamente uma conversa mesmo.

• I talk to my sister every day. (Eu falo/converso com minha irmã todos os dias.)
• They are talking about their weekend plans. (Eles estão falando/conversando sobre os planos para o fim de semana.)
• She has talked to the manager about the issue. (Ela falou/conversou com o gerente sobre o problema.)
• We talked for hours at the coffee shop yesterday. (Nós conversamos/falamos por horas na cafeteria ontem.)
• While we were walking, we talked about our favorite movies. (Enquanto estávamos andando, conversamos/falamos sobre nossos filmes favoritos.)
• By the time I arrived, they had already talked about the project. (Quando cheguei, eles já tinham conversado/falado sobre o projeto.)
• I will talk to my supervisor about the upcoming deadlines. (Eu vou falar/conversar com meu supervisor sobre os prazos que estão chegando.)
• At this time tomorrow, they will be talking to the client. (A essa hora amanhã, eles estarão falando/conversando com o cliente.)
• By the end of the month, she will have talked to all the team members. (Até o final do mês, ela terá conversado/falado com todos os membros da equipe.)
• If he had known, he would have talked to you before making the decision. (Se ele soubesse, ele teria conversado/falado com você antes de tomar a decisão.)
