Speaker: In terms of well-known South American tourist destinations Asunción is probably quite far down the list. However, it is quietly becoming more popular and now is a great time to visit as at some point in the near future it is bound to become chock-a-block with visitors.
Asunción gives off a quiet vibe and despite the fact that it has over half a million residents it never feels too hectic. In certain parts, the city still gives off an air of colonial times, but the city center is characterized by the kind of skyscrapers and modern architecture you could see in many cities around the world.
Palacio de Los López is undoubtedly Asunción’s shining light when it comes to first impressions. Primarily influenced by neoclassical style this building was originally constructed as a grand home but today serves as a workplace for the President. Construction began in 1857 and took over a decade to complete as the perfect materials were slowly sourced from all around the country. The palace also comes with stunning night lighting so head there after dark for the full effect.
If you are the kind of person who likes to splash the cash, then there are plenty of parts in Asunción in which your wallet will be opened more than it is closed. Shopping Del Sol is a bi-level modern mall which has just about anything you could want. This shopper’s paradise welcomes around 600,000 eager consumers every month and you won’t regret becoming one of them.
A nice way to end your day in the capital is with an ice-cold glass of Tereré. Tereré is a cool beverage made with yerba mate, and it has become a cultural icon in Paraguay. Usually served with a metal straw it can often be complemented with a series of medicinal herbs such as mint, lemon balm or peregrina. One of the best places to try it out is the quaint El Café de Acá, a lovely little place where you can try it in tandem with a number of other Paraguayan specialities.
