ESL WORKSHEET - Describing a photograph

LESSON PLAN FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
SAY WHAT YOU SEE

May 30, 2021

Level: Pre-Intermediate (A2-B1)
Type of English: General English
Tags: People and Places; Environment and Nature; Describing Pictures and Photos; Like, Look Like and Be Like; Present Tenses; Vocabulary and Grammar
Publication date: 05/30/2021

This lesson helps students to formulate a short spoken description of a photograph. Students need to talk about photos in work, study, and social contexts, and the lesson also supports students who are preparing for speaking exams. The target language includes prepositions, describing main content, the use of present continuous, and how to speculate. Students activate the language in a pair-work speaking activity, and there is also a short optional extension activity that gives additional practice in speculation. (by Stephanie Hirschman)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Examiner: Now I’d like you to talk on your own about something. I’m going to give you a photograph and I’d like you to talk about it. Here is your photograph. It shows two people sharing ideas.
Student: OK. There are two people in this photo. … There’s… an older woman in the middle. … She’s talking to… a younger man, …on the right. … I think… they work together …or maybe …she’s his teacher. … They’re talking about a photo …and there are more photos at the bottom of the picture. … They look… very happy with their work. … Their office is in the background,… or perhaps it’s a school.
