Students work with the topic of a historic castle to contextualize various uses of definite, indefinite and zero articles. A brief explanation of this language point is provided as well as practice exercises and speaking and writing tasks. AUDIO TRANSCRIPT
Speaker: Lewes is a town in Sussex, in southeast England. After the Normans took control of England in 1066, the king gave this part of Sussex to the de la Warenne family, who built a castle on a hill. At first, it was protected by wooden walls, but these were later replaced with stone. In 1620, some parts of the castle were pulled down so the stone could be reused.
Speaker: William Morris, a 19th-century designer, once compared Lewes to a box of toys, lying under the surrounding hills. Today visitors can climb the highest tower to enjoy amazing views of the town and countryside. Weekend visitors can explore the stores, have dinner in a traditional pub, and even go to the movie theater! Once a year, on the fifth of November, Lewes hosts the biggest Bonfire Night celebration in the country. It’s an amazing sight.
