Vets’ Advice: Your questions, expert answers
Lucy: Help! My new puppy keeps going to the bathroom in the house. She’s destroyed my carpet, so I have to buy a new one! What can I do?
Charlie the Vet: Have you got a daily routine for your puppy yet? It helps if both of you know when he/she needs to go to the bathroom. If you still haven’t done this, how will either of you know what to expect? If you’ve already started going for regular walks outside, this would be the perfect time and place for going to the bathroom. Remember to clean up!
Tilly: I have a new puppy, but I haven’t taken her out on the leash yet. When should we start? The advice I’ve seen on other websites isn’t very clear, so I don’t know what to do.
Charlie the Vet: If your puppy has already had all her vaccinations, she can go out from the age of 12 weeks for around ten to fifteen minutes to begin with. Even if she still hasn’t been out, you can try putting her on the leash for a few minutes in the house every day, so she knows what to expect later.
