In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills by talking about their sleep habits. They start the lesson by identifying and personalizing the topic and then go on to identify a set of subject-related lexis. They then focus on the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the words and phrases before practicing the language in a discussion task. The students then develop their listening skills by hearing the language in context. They listen to people describe their sleep habits and complete a comprehension task. They then use the language to describe and compare their habits. The lesson finishes with a group mingling speaking activity and a game to develop fluency and review the vocabulary. (by V. Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker A: I have no trouble sleeping. I sleep like a log most nights. I always get at least seven hours of sleep, sometimes more. I never remember any dreams. I think the last nightmare I had was about five years ago. It was very clear and scary. I woke up sweating.
Speaker B: I often fall asleep while watching TV. I wake up around two in the morning but then I am wide awake and can’t sleep. I read for a few hours and then go to bed around 4 am. I often get tired the next day so I take a nap when I can.
Speaker C: I used to sleepwalk when I was young. Once, I walked out of my bedroom and fell down the stairs. Luckily, I was ok. I don’t do it anymore, but I have been told that I snore loudly.
Speaker D: I love sleeping. I always sleep in on Saturdays and Sundays until at least midday. During the week, when I have to get up early for work, I hit the snooze button on my alarm at least three times before I finally get up. Monday mornings are the worst.
