In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills by talking about healthy and unhealthy habits. To engage with the topic, they start by describing two images and identify and practice subject-related vocabulary. They then take part in an information gap speaking task to learn different aspects of healthy and unhealthy living. The students then develop their listening skills by hearing three people discussing whether they are fit and healthy. They then use the examples to plan and describe their own healthy and unhealthy habits. They then consolidate and personalize the language in a productive group mingling task. There is an additional speaking task which develops the topic further and reviews question forms. There is a final describing game to review the lesson. (by Victoria Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker 1: Yes, I think I’m fairly healthy. I exercise daily as I walk to work. It takes about 45 minutes each way. I also play tennis twice a week. I try to eat healthy food during the week, but I sometimes eat junk food on the weekends. I drink lots of water, around two liters a day. I do enjoy wine, so I usually have two glasses every evening.
Speaker 2: No, I’m not very healthy. I have a very busy job and I work a lot of hours, so I never have time to exercise or cook. When I finally get home, I am too tired and stressed to do any sports or activities. I often skip meals and as a result, I eat a lot of junk food and way too much sugar.
Speaker 3: In some ways, I am really healthy. I eat good food and avoid junk food and I do yoga every day. However, I spend a lot of time in front of a screen. I work in front of a computer all day, seven days a week and don’t get enough time outdoors to breathe fresh air.
