THE CAT
O Gato

The year is 1935. The place is Hollywood. The Los Angeles newspapers call him the Cat. He steals at night. Tonight he is at a house in the Hollywood Hills. The people in the house are having a party. (O ano é 1935. O lugar é Hollywood. Os jornais de Los Angeles o chamam de o Gato. Ele rouba à noite. Nesta noite, ele está em uma casa nas colinas de Hollywood. As pessoas na casa estão dando uma festa.)
They cannot see or hear the Cat. He is on the roof. (Eles não conseguem ver nem ouvir o Gato. Ele está no telhado.)
“I need to get to that window”, he thinks. Minutes later, he is making a hole in the window. (“Eu preciso chegar até aquela janela”, ele pensa. Minutos depois, ele está fazendo um buraco na janela.)
The Cat opens the window and gets into a bedroom. He listens, but everything is quiet in the room. The only noise is the party. (O Gato abre a janela e entra em um quarto. Ele escuta, mas tudo está silencioso no quarto. O único barulho é o da festa.)
“Now I must find the jewels”, he thinks. (“Agora eu preciso encontrar as joias”, ele pensa.)
It only takes him a minute or two to find them. (Ele demora apenas um ou dois minutos para encontrá-las.)
“I can get hundreds of dollars for these”, he thinks. (“Posso conseguir centenas de dólares por isto”, ele pensa.)
Moving quickly, he puts them into his bag and leaves. (Movendo-se rapidamente, ele coloca tudo na bolsa e vai embora.)
Next day, at Starshine Studios, Zack Wakeman is making a movie. The star of the movie is Natalie Nevins. She begins to act. (No dia seguinte, nos estúdios Starshine, Zack Wakeman está fazendo um filme. A estrela do filme é Natalie Nevins. Ela começa a atuar.)
“Okay, Natalie”, Zack says. “Act very afraid. You want to get out of the building”, he says. “You look up. You can’t see Brad. But Brad, you can see Natalie, and you’re waiting for her. Okay”, says Zack. “Now bring on the stand-ins.” (“Certo, Natalie”, diz Zack. “Aja como se estivesse muito assustada. Você quer sair do prédio”, ele diz. “Você olha para cima. Não consegue ver Brad. Mas você, Brad, consegue ver Natalie e está esperando por ela. Certo”, diz Zack. “Agora tragam os dublês.”)
The stand-ins are Nathan and Bud. They do all the dangerous things in the movie. All the stunts. Nathan is Natalie’s stand-in. And Bud is Brad Poole’s stand-in. (Os dublês são Nathan e Bud. Eles fazem todas as partes perigosas do filme, todas as cenas de ação. Nathan é o dublê de Natalie. E Bud é o dublê de Brad Poole.)
“Good luck, Nathan”, says Natalie. (“Boa sorte, Nathan”, diz Natalie.)
“Thanks, Miss Nevins”, says Nathan. (“Obrigado, senhorita Nevins”, diz Nathan.)
Brad says nothing to Bud. (Brad não diz nada a Bud.)
“Okay”, calls Zack. “Begin to climb up the building, Nathan.” (“Certo”, grita Zack. “Comece a subir o prédio, Nathan.”)
The two stand-ins begin to act. Nathan climbs out of the window and up onto the roof of the building. Bud is waiting for him. (Os dois dublês começam a atuar. Nathan sai pela janela e sobe até o telhado do prédio. Bud está esperando por ele.)
“At first, you don’t see Bud, Nathan”, calls Zack. “Now you do. And Bud, you try to stop Nathan, but he gets away.” (“No começo, você não vê Bud, Nathan”, grita Zack. “Agora você o vê. E você, Bud, tenta parar Nathan, mas ele consegue escapar.”)
Nathan quickly gets away from Bud and runs across the roof of the building. Bud runs after him. Natalie Nevins is watching them. (Nathan se afasta rapidamente de Bud e corre pelo telhado do prédio. Bud corre atrás dele. Natalie Nevins está observando os dois.)
“I can do that”, she thinks. “Nathan is very good, but I don’t need a stand-in.” (“Eu consigo fazer isso”, ela pensa. “Nathan é muito bom, mas eu não preciso de dublê.”)
“Okay, everybody”, calls Zack. “We are beginning again in twenty minutes.” (“Certo, pessoal”, grita Zack. “Recomeçamos em vinte minutos.”)
“I like your hair, Nathan”, says Bud, laughing. “It’s very nice. You’re very pretty.” (“Eu gosto do seu cabelo, Nathan”, diz Bud, rindo. “É muito bonito. Você é muito bonitinho.”)
Nathan is angry, but he says nothing. He does not like Bud. (Nathan fica com raiva, mas não diz nada. Ele não gosta de Bud.)
Natalie goes to speak to Zack. (Natalie vai falar com Zack.)
“What’s wrong, Natalie?”, Zack asks. (“O que houve, Natalie?”, pergunta Zack.)
“Mr. Wakeman, please, can I do some of my stunts?”, asks Natalie. “I don’t always need a stand-in.” (“Sr. Wakeman, por favor, posso fazer algumas das minhas cenas perigosas?”, pergunta Natalie. “Eu não preciso sempre de dublê.”)
“Sorry, Natalie”, says Zack. “The stunts are too dangerous.” (“Desculpe, Natalie”, diz Zack. “As cenas são perigosas demais.”)
“Why do you want to do your stunts, Natalie?”, Brad Poole asks her. “I’m happy to leave the dangerous acting to Bud.” (“Por que você quer fazer as cenas perigosas, Natalie?”, pergunta Brad Poole. “Eu fico feliz em deixar as partes perigosas para Bud.”)
“Are you coming to my party tonight, Natalie?”, Zack asks. “It begins at eight o’clock.” (“Você vai à minha festa hoje à noite, Natalie?”, pergunta Zack. “Começa às oito horas.”)
“Yes, Mr. Wakeman”, says Natalie. (“Sim, senhor Wakeman”, diz Natalie.)
“Me too”, says Brad. (“Eu também”, diz Brad.)
Zack goes to speak to Nathan. (Zack vai falar com Nathan.)
“I can give you twenty dollars to park the cars at my party tonight, Nathan”, he says. “Do you want to do it?” (“Posso lhe dar vinte dólares para estacionar os carros na minha festa hoje à noite, Nathan”, ele diz. “Você quer fazer isso?”)
“Yes, please, Mr. Wakeman”, says Nathan. (“Sim, por favor, senhor Wakeman”, diz Nathan.)
That night, Natalie Nevins arrives at Zack Wakeman’s house in the Hollywood Hills. (Naquela noite, Natalie Nevins chega à casa de Zack Wakeman nas colinas de Hollywood.)
“Hi, Miss Nevins”, says Nathan. (“Oi, senhorita Nevins”, diz Nathan.)
“Hi, Nathan”, says Natalie. “Are you working here tonight?” (“Oi, Nathan”, diz Natalie. “Você está trabalhando aqui hoje à noite?”)
“Yes”, says Nathan. “I’m helping to park the cars.” (“Sim”, diz Nathan. “Estou ajudando a estacionar os carros.”)
“Why?”, asks Natalie. (“Por quê?”, pergunta Natalie.)
“Because I need the money”, Nathan tells her. (“Porque eu preciso do dinheiro”, diz Nathan.)
The Cat is out again. This time, he is going to steal from Zack Wakeman’s house. He leaves his car near the trees and waits. (O Gato está em ação novamente. Desta vez, ele vai roubar na casa de Zack Wakeman. Ele deixa o carro perto das árvores e espera.)
Quickly, he runs across to the building and begins to climb. Nathan does not see the Cat. He is watching Natalie Nevins go into the house. (Rapidamente, ele corre até o prédio e começa a subir. Nathan não vê o Gato. Ele está observando Natalie Nevins entrar na casa.)
“There are lots of movie stars here tonight”, he thinks. “But Miss Nevins is the most beautiful.” (“Há muitas estrelas de cinema aqui esta noite”, ele pensa. “Mas a senhorita Nevins é a mais bonita.”)
After some time, Nathan goes to look at the swimming pool. A minute later, he sees Natalie Nevins. She is coming out of the house. She has two drinks. (Depois de algum tempo, Nathan vai olhar a piscina. Um minuto depois, ele vê Natalie Nevins. Ela está saindo da casa. Ela tem duas bebidas.)
“I have a drink for you”, she says. (“Tenho uma bebida para você”, ela diz.)
“Oh, thanks, Miss Nevins”, says Nathan. (“Ah, obrigado, senhorita Nevins”, diz Nathan.)
“You’re a good stand-in, Nathan”, she says. “But I want to do some of my stunts in the movie. Mr. Wakeman says no, but I…” (“Você é um bom dublê, Nathan”, ela diz. “Mas eu quero fazer algumas das minhas cenas no filme. O senhor Wakeman diz que não, mas eu…”)
Suddenly, she sees someone running to the trees. (De repente, ela vê alguém correndo em direção às árvores.)
“Look”, she says. “Who’s that?” (“Olhe”, ela diz. “Quem é aquele?”)
“It’s the Cat”, says Nathan. “Remember him from the newspaper?” (“É o Gato”, diz Nathan. “Lembra dele no jornal?”)
“He’s going to that car. Quick”, says Natalie. “Let’s get my car.” (“Ele está indo para aquele carro. Rápido”, diz Natalie. “Vamos pegar o meu carro.”)
“Do you want me to drive?”, Nathan asks. “I can drive really fast.” (“Você quer que eu dirija?”, pergunta Nathan. “Eu posso dirigir bem rápido.”)
“No”, Natalie tells him. “I’m driving.” (“Não”, diz Natalie. “Eu vou dirigir.”)
Natalie drives fast, and it is a dangerous road. (Natalie dirige rápido, e é uma estrada perigosa.)
“Be careful, Miss Nevins”, says Nathan. “You have a movie to finish, remember?” (“Cuidado, senhorita Nevins”, diz Nathan. “Você ainda tem um filme para terminar, lembra?”)
“It’s okay. I’m a good driver”, she says. She smiles. “And you can call me Natalie.” (“Está tudo bem. Eu sou uma boa motorista”, ela diz. Ela sorri. “E você pode me chamar de Natalie.”)
Nathan smiles, too. “Okay”, he says. (Nathan também sorri. “Tudo bem”, ele diz.)
“We’re getting near to him”, says Natalie. (“Estamos chegando perto dele”, diz Natalie.)
“Yes, but look. There’s a train coming”, says Nathan. (“Sim, mas olhe. Tem um trem vindo”, diz Nathan.)
Natalie looks quickly. “It’s okay”, she says. “It’s not going to hit us.” (Natalie olha rapidamente. “Está tudo bem”, ela diz. “Ele não vai bater na gente.”)
The train is moving fast. (O trem está vindo rápido.)
“We aren’t going to do it”, says Nathan. (“Não vamos conseguir”, diz Nathan.)
“Yes, we are”, Natalie tells him. (“Vamos sim”, diz Natalie.)
“Wow, that was close”, says Nathan. (“Uau, essa foi por pouco”, diz Nathan.)
Natalie laughs and says nothing. (Natalie ri e não diz nada.)
Suddenly, two policemen see Natalie’s car. (De repente, dois policiais veem o carro de Natalie.)
“Look at them”, says one policeman. “How fast are they going, Joe?” (“Olhe para eles”, diz um policial. “Quão rápido eles estão indo, Joe?”)
“Too fast, Sam”, says Joe. (“Rápido demais, Sam”, diz Joe.)
“Let’s stop them. It’s not going to be easy”, says Sam. “But let’s go.” (“Vamos pará-los. Não vai ser fácil”, diz Sam. “Mas vamos lá.”)
Suddenly, Nathan sees the police car. (De repente, Nathan vê o carro da polícia.)
“Uh, Natalie”, he says. (“É… Natalie”, ele diz.)
“What is it?”, she asks. (“O que foi?”, ela pergunta.)
“There’s a police car behind us”, says Nathan. “It wants us to stop.” (“Há um carro da polícia atrás de nós”, diz Nathan. “Eles querem que a gente pare.”)
“I’m not stopping”, she says. “It’s okay. We can tell them everything later. First, we have to stop the Cat.” (“Eu não vou parar”, ela diz. “Está tudo bem. Depois explicamos tudo. Primeiro, precisamos parar o Gato.”)
Suddenly, the Cat sees the police car, too. (De repente, o Gato também vê o carro da polícia.)
“Oh, no”, he says. “I need to get out of this car.” (“Ah, não”, ele diz. “Preciso sair deste carro.”)
He stops his car and runs. Soon after, Natalie and Nathan are jumping from Natalie’s car. The Cat looks back and sees them. (Ele para o carro e sai correndo. Logo depois, Natalie e Nathan saltam do carro de Natalie. O Gato olha para trás e os vê.)
“They’re stopping, too”, he thinks. “So, who can run the fastest?” (“Eles também estão parando”, ele pensa. “Então, quem corre mais rápido?”)
Minutes later, the police car stops near Natalie’s car. The two policemen jump out and look for Natalie and Nathan. (Minutos depois, o carro da polícia para perto do carro de Natalie. Os dois policiais descem e procuram Natalie e Nathan.)
“Where are they, Sam?”, asks Joe. (“Onde eles estão, Sam?”, pergunta Joe.)
“I don’t know”, says Sam. “I can’t see them. There are too many people.” (“Não sei”, diz Sam. “Não consigo vê-los. Tem gente demais.”)
“There he is”, says Natalie. “There’s the Cat!” (“Ali está ele”, diz Natalie. “Lá está o Gato!”)
“He’s running to that building”, says Nathan. (“Ele está correndo para aquele prédio”, diz Nathan.)
“Let’s go”, says Natalie, and she runs after the Cat. Nathan runs after her. (“Vamos”, diz Natalie, e ela corre atrás do Gato. Nathan corre atrás dela.)
“He’s going up to the roof”, he says. (“Ele está subindo para o telhado”, ele diz.)
And the three of them begin to climb up to the roof of the building. (E os três começam a subir em direção ao telhado do prédio.)
Suddenly, the Cat throws his bag at Natalie. She does not see it, but Nathan does. (De repente, o Gato joga a bolsa em direção a Natalie. Ela não vê, mas Nathan vê.)
“Natalie, the bag!”, he calls. (“Natalie, a bolsa!”, ele grita.)
The bag does not hit Natalie, but it hits Nathan. (A bolsa não atinge Natalie, mas atinge Nathan.)
“Nathan, are you all right?”, calls Natalie. (“Nathan, você está bem?”, grita Natalie.)
“I’m okay”, says Nathan. (“Estou bem”, diz Nathan.)
The Cat and Natalie run across the roof of the building. Then, the Cat jumps from one building to the next. Natalie watches him. (O Gato e Natalie correm pelo telhado do prédio. Então, o Gato salta de um prédio para o outro. Natalie observa.)
“Can I do that?”, she thinks. (“Será que eu consigo fazer isso?”, ela pensa.)
Natalie jumps. Nathan sees her. (Natalie salta. Nathan a vê.)
“Wow, look at her!”, he thinks. (“Uau, olha só para ela!”, ele pensa.)
The Cat sees her, too. (O Gato também a vê.)
“How can I get away from her?”, he thinks. (“Como posso fugir dela?”, ele pensa.)
He cannot get away from her. (Ele não consegue fugir dela.)
“Got you”, says Natalie, and she jumps on him. “So who are you?” She takes off the Cat’s mask. “You”, she says. (“Peguei você”, diz Natalie, e pula sobre ele. “Então, quem é você?” Ela tira a máscara do Gato. “Você”, ela diz.)
“It’s Bud”, says Nathan. (“É o Bud”, diz Nathan.)
The policemen arrive and look from Natalie to Bud. And back again. (Os policiais chegam e olham de Natalie para Bud. E depois de Bud para Natalie.)
“It’s the movie star, Natalie Nevins”, says Joe. (“É a estrela de cinema, Natalie Nevins”, diz Joe.)
“Yes”, says Sam. “And the Cat!” (“Isso mesmo”, diz Sam. “E o Gato!”)
The next day, Nathan and Natalie tell Zack their story. (No dia seguinte, Nathan e Natalie contam a história a Zack.)
“Bud is the Cat?”, he asks. (“Bud é o Gato?”, ele pergunta.)
“That’s right”, says Natalie. (“Isso mesmo”, diz Natalie.)
“And you want to be Brad’s new stand-in?”, Zack says to Nathan. “Okay, but we need a new stand-in for Natalie. Who can do her stunts?” (“E você quer ser o novo dublê de Brad?”, diz Zack a Nathan. “Tudo bem, mas precisamos de um novo dublê para Natalie. Quem pode fazer as cenas perigosas dela?”)
“Natalie doesn’t need a stand-in”, says Nathan, laughing. “She can do her stunts.” (“Natalie não precisa de dublê”, diz Nathan, rindo. “Ela mesma pode fazer as cenas perigosas.”)
