They will then listen to a short audio about the history of the Internet and fill in missing words in a text. Following this, students will practice identifying and pronouncing symbols used in email addresses. They will read a text about social media and answer questions about how it has changed our lives. Finally, they can complete a crossword and write a blog post using the new vocabulary. (by Joey Vaughan-Birch)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker: In the late 1960s, a project called ARPANET was started by Vint Cerf and Robert Kahn. They wanted to connect different computers so they could share information. By 1973, they made rules called TCP/IP. These rules are still used today to help computers talk to each other.
In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee from the UK invented the World Wide Web. He made it easier for people to use the Internet by creating websites that we could visit. Later, browsers like Mosaic and Netscape Navigator helped more people start to visit websites.
In the mid-90s, websites like eBay and Amazon started. These sites changed how we shop and do business because we could buy things online. The Internet started to grow quickly.
In the 2000s, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter became popular. Facebook allowed us to connect with friends, share photos, and post updates. Twitter lets us send short messages and follow others. Google also became very important for finding information quickly.
By the late 2000s, smartphones with the Internet became common. This made it simple to stay connected anywhere. Apps for social media, news, and shopping became popular. Streaming companies like Netflix and Spotify changed how we watch TV and listen to music.
