VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Reader: And coming up later this month, it’s World Turtle Day. Celebrated on May 23rd every year, World Turtle Day was started by the husband-and-wife team Marshall Thompson and Susan Tellem in the year 2000. The idea behind the day is to raise awareness of this endangered species and encourage humane treatment of turtles, tortoises, and all reptiles.
For example, did you know that you should never buy a turtle or a tortoise from a pet shop? Doing this will unfortunately increase demand for them, and they will be taken from the wild. Turtles and tortoises should never be removed from the wild unless they are sick or injured.
What do you do if you see a turtle crossing a busy street? You should pick it up for its own safety. You don’t want it to get hurt by cars. Make sure though, that you move it in the same direction it was going. They’re pretty stubborn, and if you take it the wrong way, they will turn around and go back.
You should also never buy turtles or tortoises that are smaller than four inches long. They are too young, and buying or selling them is illegal. Get yourself over to www.worldturtleday.org to find out more about the day and see what you can do to get involved...
