In this lesson students will learn vocabulary from two different lexical sets: shops and souvenirs, and adjectives to describe them. They will also see and practice zero and first conditionals and use these language points to write an email and role-play a client/assistant situation. (by Edward Alden)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Tourist: Hi! I’m new to the area. Could you recommend some good places to shop near the hotel?
Hotel staff: Of course! There are quite a few great stores around here. If you look to your left, there’s a nice gift shop just down the street where you can buy souvenirs. You can find lots of handmade items there, made by local artisans.
Tourist: That sounds great! What about books? I’d love to find a bookstore.
Hotel staff: Sure! There’s one a few blocks away. It’s the perfect place if you want to find a great selection of both imported and local books, so you’ll find something interesting to read.
Tourist: I’m also interested in trying some local food. Any suggestions?
Hotel staff: Yes! The food market near the park is fantastic if you want to buy fresh food produced by our local farmers.
Tourist: Sounds delicious! Are there any smaller, more casual stores nearby?
Hotel staff: Definitely! There are plenty of convenience stores in the area, where you can get some snacks or drinks. If you’re looking for something unique, I mean, things that are only available in the region, I can definitely recommend somewhere else. If you visit the local market nearby, you’ll find some authentic items, not the fake ones that you might see in larger stores.
Tourist: I love the idea of shopping for something classic! Thank you for the tips!
