By the way... and other linking words

By the way

1. We're having a meeting tomorrow. By the way, can you bring the reports?
2. I finished reading that book. By the way, did you like the ending? (Terminei de ler aquele livro. Aliás / Por falar nisso, você gostou do final?)
3. I'm learning to play the guitar. By the way, do you play any instruments? (Estou aprendendo a tocar violão. Aliás / Por falar nisso, você toca algum instrumento?)
4. I spoke with John yesterday. By the way, he mentioned you. (Conversei com o John ontem. Aliás / Por falar nisso, ele mencionou você.)

Incidentally

5. Incidentally, I just remembered that I have a meeting tomorrow morning.
6. Your idea, incidentally, is quite similar to what we were discussing last week.
7. Incidentally, do you know if there are any good restaurants near the hotel? (Aliás / Por acaso, sabe se existem bons restaurantes perto do hotel?)
8. The new policy, incidentally, will take effect starting next month. (A nova política, aliás / por acaso, entrará em vigor a partir do próximo mês.)

As a matter of fact
As a matter of fact corresponde ao nosso “na verdade”, e pode ser usada no mesmo sentido de “aliás”, assim como os sinônimos in fact, in reality, actually, etc.

9. I visit the park regularly. As a matter of fact, I was there this morning. (Eu visito o parque regularmente. Aliás / Na verdade, eu estava lá esta manhã.)
10. She's an excellent dancer. As a matter of fact, she won a competition last month. (Ela é uma excelente dançarina. Aliás / Na verdade, ela ganhou uma competição no mês passado.)
11. I usually go to bed early. As a matter of fact, I was asleep by 9 PM yesterday.
12. I enjoy cooking. As a matter of fact, I cooked dinner for the whole family yesterday. (Eu gosto de cozinhar. Aliás / Na verdade, ontem eu preparei o jantar para toda a família.)

On a side note

13. The project deadline is next week. On a side note, I have some new data that might be useful.
14. I'll send you the updated documents soon. On a side note, have you checked the latest market trends?
15. We need to finalize the marketing plan. On a side note, have you approved the new campaign visuals?
16. The client presentation is on Monday. On a side note, I printed extra copies of the report. Aliás, imprimi cópias extras do relatório.)

Besides

17. I really need some money. Besides, he owes me! (Eu realmente preciso de dinheiro. Aliás / Além disso, ele está me devendo!)
18. We need to buy some supplies. Besides, we're out of paper. (Precisamos comprar alguns suprimentos. Aliás / Além disso, o papel acabou.)
19. I'm tired of this job. Besides, the pay is not good. (Estou cansado deste emprego. Aliás / Além disso, o salário não é bom.)
20. She loves painting and, besides, she's very talented. (Ela adora pintar e, aliás / além disso, é muito talentosa.)

Furthermore

21. I enjoy spending time outdoors; furthermore, it helps me relax and clear my mind.
22. Sarah is a talented writer. Furthermore, she's also a skilled photographer.
23. We had a productive class this morning; furthermore, we managed to finish the lessons early.
24. I enjoy reading fiction novels; furthermore, they allow me to escape into different worlds.

25. The project was completed ahead of schedule. Indeed, it was a success. (O projeto foi concluído antes do prazo. Aliás / De fato, foi um sucesso.)
26. She received a promotion at work. Indeed, she deserved it. (Ela recebeu uma promoção no trabalho. Aliás / De fato, ela mereceu.)
27. The team won the championship. Indeed, they played exceptionally well. (O time venceu o campeonato. Aliás / De fato, jogaram excepcionalmente bem.)
28. The movie was critically acclaimed. Indeed, it won several awards at the festival. (O filme foi aclamado pela crítica. Aliás / De fato, ganhou vários prêmios no festival.)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Speaker: I started working at this company about a year ago, and I remember when I began, I was highly motivated to do a good job. To be honest, the first couple of months were okay, I would happily work away at my desk on different tasks, and everything seemed fine. However, as time went by, I quickly noticed that unfortunately, I was struggling to meet deadlines.
For this reason, I started to spend more and more time at the office, I felt like I was acting selfishly because I was seeing less and less of my kids, but I knew I had to seriously think about being able to put food on the table for them.
Surprisingly, I began to catch up with my workload, but to be able to achieve this it meant I had to spend all day at work. I would eat all three meals in the terrible staff cafeteria, and I felt myself slowly losing my appetite. I would really like to talk to someone safely about this whole situation, but I am scared my boss will find out and I will probably lose my job.

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Anthony: Hi everyone! It’s time for our regular sports podcast: Get moving! Today, reporter Nic Powell is here and we’re going to talk about surfing. Why surfing, Nic?
Nic: Well, first of all, I love surfing! But, more importantly, surfing is one of five new Olympic events, along with skateboarding, climbing, karate and baseball. The organizers wanted to bring in sports that appeal to younger people. I think we’re all really going to enjoy watching Olympic surfing!
Anthony: How did surfing get started, Nic?
Nic: We know that surfing developed in Hawaii. Interestingly, the Hawaiian people had organized their food production so well that they had lots of free time, which they used for surfing. Everyone did it and it was a huge part of their social and religious life.
Anthony: How did surfing become popular around the world?
Nic: Although surfing in Hawaii temporarily declined as a result of changes introduced by Western people in the 1800s, it started to receive more attention again in the 20th century as the islands became tourist destinations. As people found out more about surfing, it became popular in other parts of the world.
Anthony: When I think about surfing, I always think of those California beach movies from the 1950s and 60s.
Nic: Yes, the surfing lifestyle really took off in Southern California after the Second World War. People improved the design of the boards, using new materials and shapes so that they could surf in different conditions. Also, the development of the wetsuit at this time meant that surfers could go out in colder waters. Surfing was now possible all over the world!
Anthony: There were lots of competitions, weren’t there?
Nic: Yes, that’s right. But men’s surfing competitions received most of the attention. Women’s surfing was a side show: the surfers received less prize money and had to surf in worse locations. It wasn’t until 2019 that women surfers received equal pay. They had been fighting for this for 40 years!
Anthony: And I believe this isn’t the only issue that surfers have been involved with?
Nic: That’s right. Surfers at all levels are also very much involved in environmental issues. As they spend so much time in the water, they’re very aware of water quality and plastic pollution. Surfers have cleaned up beaches and raised awareness of the need for conservation all over the world.
Anthony: So, surfers help look after the environment. What are some of the other benefits of surfing?
Nic: Surfing is not only a sport, it is also a mindful activity that can help people with mental health problems. When you’re surfing you have to live in the moment, noticing how the water and wind conditions are changing. You can really feel like you’re getting away from all your problems. And spending time outdoors in nature is also very good for us.
Anthony: We’re nearly out of time, Nic, but before we go, tell us about an amazing place to surf.
Nic: Just one? I can think of two places that I really want to try. The first is Nazare in Portugal. In winter, the waves can be 24 meters high! And if you want a real adventure, try surfing in Yakutat, Alaska, under a snowy mountain with bears on the shore!
Anthony: Wow! Thanks, Nic.

ENGLISH in PORTUGUESE?!?

O PORTUGUÊS QUE PENSAVA
QUE SABIA INGLÊS

Marco Neves
25 jun. 2024

O livro tem, hoje, o título English As She Is Spoke.
The fishing.
That pond it seems me many multiplied of fishes. Let us amuse rather to the fishing.
I do like-it too much.
Here, there is a wand and some hooks.
Silence! there is a superb perch! Give me quick the rod. Ah! There is, it is a lamprey.
You mistake you, it is a frog! dip again it in the water.
