Teacher: Okay, let’s do the next exercise. Can you read the first question, please?
Student: What did the man … how do you say the next word?
Teacher: Receive.
Student: What did the man receive for his birthday?
Teacher: Great. And what’s the answer?
Student: He received a kettle for his birthday.
Teacher: Correct. Do you have any questions?
Student: What does kettle mean?
Teacher: It’s something that you use to heat water, like if you want to make a cup of tea. Sometimes they’re electric, and sometimes you put them on your stove.
Student: Can we say this: I kettle water for tea?
Teacher: That’s a good question, but no, it’s not a verb. What kind of word is kettle? Remember the answer to the question: he received a kettle for his birthday.
Student: I think it’s a noun.
Teacher: That’s right. Now, don’t look at your paper. Can you remember how to spell receive?
Student: R-E-C-E-I-V-E.
Teacher: Well done. Lots of native speakers have problems spelling that word correctly.
Student: I have one more question. In the picture, next to the kettle, what do you call this?
Teacher: It’s a teapot.

Theo’s mom: Hello. Thank you so much.
Theo: Hi, Iris. How are you?
Iris: I’m fine, thanks. Come and see my bedroom.
Theo: OK! I want to play some games.

Iris: This is my room. There’s a big bed.
Theo: Wow! Your bed is big, but I have a big toy box.
Iris: My toy box isn’t big. There are two closets.
Theo: OK. In my bedroom there’s one closet. (sound of giggles)

Theo: Let’s play a board game. Do you have “Don’t break the ice”?
Iris: Yes! I love it ... Umm... Where is it? Ah! It’s under my bed.
Theo: Is it under your bed?
Iris: No, it isn’t. I can’t see it.

Iris: Yes, Mom! We’re playing a board game.
Theo: I can’t see the game in your closet.
Iris: (sighs) It isn’t in my closet. Let’s look in my desk and dresser.
