In this updated lesson, students develop their receptive and productive skills by talking about preparing to travel. To connect with the topic, the students first discuss some photos and personalized related questions. They then identify topic-related phrases and listen to a short podcast on pre-travel advice to hear the language in context. The students then focus on, practice, and review useful vocabulary in a variety of different interactive activities. They then read and understand a short text about travel preparations before focusing on and practicing the use of the infinitive of purpose structure to highlight why someone is doing something. They complete the lesson by consolidating the language in a productive task in which they plan and describe their own travel plans. There is an additional group speaking task to develop and personalize the topic further. (by Vicky Aitken)

AUDIO/VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Narrator: Before you travel it is important to research the destination, and it is easy to do online. You need to book accommodation and buy a plane or bus ticket. Be sure to get travel insurance and check your passport. You must have at least six months left before the expiry date. If you are going to a country with a different language, it is a good idea to learn a few basic phrases. And not all places accept cards so change some money into the local currency. The last thing to do is pack your bags. Don’t pack too much and make a list of essential items so you don’t forget anything.
