They will listen to one sports fan talking about going to a game and learn more vocabulary connected to soccer and other sports. AUDIO TRANSCRIPT (American English)

Teenager: I love game days! I always wake up really early because I’m so excited. We’re playing at home today against the Seattle Sounders. It’s a huge game! The first thing I do when I jump out of bed is put my soccer jersey on. We play in red and white stripes. I buy a new jersey every season, and I have the rest of the uniform, too. I’ll put that on tomorrow when I play.
I used to go to the games with my dad, but I’m old enough to go with my friends now. They come get me at about twelve, which is three hours before kick-off. It gives us enough time to get something to eat before the game.
We usually get the bus together although if we’re lucky one of our parents might give us a ride to the stadium although they always complain about the traffic on game days. There are plenty of places to eat outside the stadium. We usually get a drink and a burger or something.
We walk into the stadium together talking about our favorite players and what we think the score will be. I think we’ll win 2-0 and our goalkeeper, my favorite player, will block a penalty shot. The stadium is filled to capacity – 40,000 fans all singing and cheering as the players come out onto the field. The referee blows his whistle to start the game.
The Seattle Sounders score first but we soon level the scores when one of their players makes an awful challenge for the ball and the referee gives us a penalty. I’m worried that he’s badly injured, but he’s fine, and our opponents can only watch as he scores his tenth penalty of the season. I’m surprised that the referee only gives their player a yellow card and not a red card because I think he should have been sent off. Anyway, it’s 1-1 at half-time.
The second half is difficult to watch because the Seattle Sounders are attacking a lot, but our goalkeeper makes lots of brilliant saves. And then with nearly the last kick of the game, we score the winning goal! Fantastic! We celebrate, the players celebrate, and the referee blows the final whistle! We won! What an incredible game!
