In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills by planning a weekend away. The students start with a short discussion to personalize the topic and then identify and practice common activity collocations. They then listen to two people discussing an upcoming weekend away and answer gist and detailed questions before focusing on functional language used for suggestions. They then practice the language in a variety of engaging and communicative tasks. They finish the lesson by consolidating and personalizing the language in a roleplay task. (by Victoria Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT (American English)

Jo: So, what should we do for our anniversary this year?
Ben: Why don’t we go away? I know, let’s go to New York City.
Jo: No, it will be packed out in New York City. I was thinking about something more relaxing. What about going to a spa?
Ben: I’d prefer something more exciting. We could go to the beach.
Jo: That’s a great idea. Let’s go to the Hamptons.
Ben: Our anniversary is on a Wednesday so should we go the weekend before or after?
Jo: Let’s go after. I think that is the … 22nd of June.
Ben: That sounds good. I think the hotels will be expensive, but I think we can find something on Airbnb. I will look into it.
Jo: Great. Why don’t we go by train on Friday after work and come back on Sunday morning?
Ben: That’s a good idea. We can tan on the beach and read books and then go to some good restaurants. It will be wonderful.
Jo: I hope the weather is nice. Knowing our luck, it will rain.
