In this lesson, we look at ways unusual companies raise motivation and productivity in the office, including smells, treadmill desks and arcade machines. Students read an article on the topic and do some comprehension and vocabulary exercises on it. They will also practice making cleft sentences to give emphasis. They then watch a video about what motivates employees, play a game to guess keywords and role-play a meeting to increase staff motivation (by Edward Alden).

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Bob 1: Would you walk us through a typical day for you?
Peter: Yeah.
Bob 1: Great.
Peter: Well, I generally come in at least 15 minutes late. Uh, I use the side door, that way Lumbergh can’t see me, and after that I just sort of space out for about an hour.
Bob 2: Space out?
Peter: Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I’m working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch too, I’d say in a given week I probably only do about 15 minutes of real actual work.
Bob 1: Peter, would you be a good sport and indulge us and just tell us a little more?
Peter: Oh yeah, let me tell you something about TPS reports. Oh, the thing is, Bob, it’s not that I’m lazy - it’s that I just don’t care.
Bob 2: Don’t... don’t care?
Peter: It’s a problem a motivation all right. Now, if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don’t see another dime, so where’s the motivation? And here’s something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob 1: I beg your pardon?
Peter: Eight bosses.
Bob 1: Eight?
Peter: Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That’s my only real motivation, is not to be hassled in the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that’ll only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.
Bob 1: Would you bear with me for just a second, please?
Peter: Okay.
Bob 1: What if - and don’t leave me, hey, this is like, let it go - but what if you were offered some kind of a stock option, equity sharing program, would that do anything for you?
Peter: I don’t know, I guess.
Peter: Listen I’m gonna go, uh, it’s been really nice talking to both of you guys.
Bob 1: Absolutely.
Bob 1: The pleasure’s all on this side of a table, trust me.
Peter: Good luck with your layoffs, all right, I hope your firings go really well.
Bob 2: Okay, thanks a lot.
Peter: Great.
Bob 1: Wow.
