This teen-friendly lesson looks at the wedding of pop star Taylor Swift and American football star Travis Kelce at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Students will listen to a fun, made-up (yet factual!) radio report about the big day and read the opinions of four people – three teenagers and a New Yorker – about the event. Exercises focus on related vocabulary, listening and reading skills, and give students plenty to talk about, from celebrity culture to life without phones. An extended activity asks students to imagine they were a guest at the wedding. (by Sophie Wilde)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT
Ella: Hi everyone, and welcome back to Pop Report! Big news this weekend: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have finally tied the knot! Our reporter Jack is outside Madison Square Garden in New York. Jack, what can you tell us?
Jack: Hi Ella! Yes, it’s official. Taylor’s publicist confirmed the news on Friday evening, and at the same moment, giant screens outside the arena lit up with the message “JUST&T MARRIED” – a joke with the names Taylor and Travis.
Ella: I love it! But Madison Square Garden is a strange venue for a wedding, isn’t it?
Jack: Maybe, but it’s very private. The couple kept everything secret – there are no photos yet, because guests couldn’t use their phones. We know the ceremony took place inside the arena, and the actor Adam Sandler officiated it. He’s a good friend of the couple.
Ella: An actor? Can he do that?
Jack: Yes! In New York State, any adult can get a special one-day license to officiate a wedding.
Ella: Amazing! What did they wear?
Jack: Taylor and Travis both wore Dior, designed by Jonathan Anderson, and their shoes were custom-made by Christian Louboutin. Taylor also wore Cartier jewelry.
Ella: And who helped them on the big day?
Jack: There were no bridesmaids or groomsmen. Taylor’s brother Austin was her “man of honor”, and Travis’s brother Jason was the best man.
Ella: How long have they been together?
Jack: They got engaged last August, after about two years together. And around 1,000 guests came to celebrate with them – singers, actors and sports stars.
Ella: What a night! Thanks, Jack.
Jack: My pleasure – now I’m going to try to see some celebrities!
