Jun. 21, 2021

Level: Pre-intermediate (A2-B1)
Type of language: General English
Tags: Travel and Leisure; Describing Places; Making Suggestions; Modal Verbs; Vocabulary and Grammar
Publication date: 06/21/2021

Students share experiences of having a day out before listening to a three-way conversation about planning a day out. They are introduced to language for making suggestions (why don't, let’s, and how about), compare how will and be going to are used for making plans and offers, and review the use of will and be going to for predictions. Students plan their own day out in a pair work speaking activity. There is also an optional extension relating to snack foods. (by Stephanie Hirschman)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Rose: Is everyone still up for our walk on Saturday?
Gabe: Yes!
Noah: Of course!
Rose: We talked about walking from Southdown to Brightsea. It’s a five-hour walk, more or less, and we can get the train to Southdown and then home again from Brightsea. Gabe, are you going to organize the train tickets again?
Gabe: Yes, I am. I can use my college ID to get a discount like I did last time.
Noah: Good idea. We can give you some money later.
Rose: I’m going to plan the route on the map tonight.
Gabe: Just like you always do. You’re a great leader!
Noah: What about food? I’ll get some snacks for everyone, maybe some chips. Why don't we all bring our own drinks and sandwiches for a picnic lunch?
Rose: Thanks, Noah. That sounds like a good idea.
Gabe: Why don't I get some fruit for us to eat after lunch?
Noah: Yes please, Gabe.
Rose: I checked the weather forecast, and it’s going to be hot on Saturday. We’ll need hats. I’ll bring a big bottle of sunscreen, and we can share it. Let’s go early so it’s not too hot.
Gabe: Good idea, and let’s bring towels so we can go swimming in the ocean at the end of the walk!
Noah: Yes, yes, yes!
Rose: How about stopping at that coffee shop just outside Brightsea? They do delicious cakes there.
Gabe: It sounds like a perfect day out.
Noah: I can’t wait!
