ESL WORKSHEET - Past tenses in a business context

LESSON PLAN FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
PAST TENSES

Dec. 26, 2022

Level: Pre-Intermediate (A2-B1)
Type of English: Business English
Tags: 16-18 Years Old; 18+ Years Old; Past Tenses; Grammar Practice; Business People
Publication date: 12/26/2022

This lesson focuses on four past tenses in a business context. It is designed for students who have already been introduced to them, but gives them an opportunity to focus on accuracy and think about why each one is used in a particular situation. Exercises contrast the tenses, look at error correction and provide an opportunity for students to write about a personal experience. (by Joe Wilson)

Last year’s conference in Oslo was very interesting. About two days before it started, we checked into this beautiful hotel. We had come all the way from Rio De Janeiro, so we had been traveling for almost two days. We were all exhausted. We’d had some problems in Washington DC. The plane had been too full, so we’d had to catch a later one. Fortunately, the beds at the hotel in Oslo were really comfortable, so we all slept really well on the first night.

On the first morning, I was having breakfast with Juliana when Hans joined us and told us that the presentation we had prepared before we left had been deleted from his computer. He didn’t understand what had happened. I didn’t have a copy of it and neither did Juliana. Our presentation was scheduled for the first day of the conference. So as soon as we finished breakfast, the three of us started creating the presentation all over again. Fortunately, we were able to remember all of it, but we were still working until almost midnight that day. We had been planning to take some time to look around Oslo instead of working, but we spent all day in my room preparing the presentation again instead. When the conference started, we all were feeling really nervous, but the presentation went really well. After we finished, a few of our customers came over and said that they had really enjoyed it. Our manager emailed us to tell us he had heard that it went really well and that some new customers had contacted him asking about our products. We hadn’t been expecting to hear such good news. We decided to leave early on the third day of the conference and go and have a meal in Oslo to celebrate.
