In this updated lesson plan, students discuss types of vacations and accommodation and compare booking methods. They listen to a phone conversation, complete a booking confirmation, and formulate definitions of some key terms, as well as reading messages between hosts and visitors. There is a choice of a written or spoken activity to conclude the lesson and an optional extension offers a chance to share personal vacation experiences and preferences (by Stephanie Hirschman).

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Gloria: ¡Dígame! ¡Hola! Hello!
Adam: Oh, hello, is that Gloria?
Gloria: Yes, this is Gloria. How can I help you?
Adam: Hi, my name’s Adam Bennett and I saw online that you have a vacation rental in Málaga. I’d like to make a booking.
Gloria: Great!
Adam: I was hoping to arrive on Friday the twenty-fourth of May. Is the apartment free then?
Gloria: Yes, you can check in any time after three pm. How long did you want to stay?
Adam: A week, so I’d be leaving the following Friday.
Gloria: Sure, that’s fine. You need to be checked out by eleven in the morning.
Adam: No problem. Can I just confirm the cost per night? The website says it’s ninety-three euros.
Gloria: That’s correct, but as you’re staying for a full week, we can offer you a ten percent discount. Let’s see, what else ... Oh, yes, there’s also a cleaning fee of thirty-five euros. Let me just work out the cost for you. Hang on ... OK, it’s going to be six hundred and twenty-one euros.
Adam: Fine. Do I need to pay a deposit?
Gloria: Yes, please. If you can transfer two hundred euros to me, that will secure your booking. Then you can pay the remaining four hundred and twenty-one euros at least one week before you arrive.
Adam: And if I need to cancel?
Gloria: We need one week’s notice. Let me just take your details so I can send you a copy of the agreement...
