AUDIO TRANSCRIPT
Speaker 1 (male): We are monitored, but it doesn’t feel like a problem to me. I work in a financial team, so it’s good to feel as though everyone is working on the same thing at the same time even though we’re in different places. I live on my own, so I quite enjoy being able to easily contact anyone in my team via chat and know that they’re there. We often have little discussions about problems we’re dealing with on chat which I find really helpful and we can easily resolve issues that way. Of course, management can see everything we say, but it’s never been a problem. One of the team is really into a Danish drama and was talking about it a lot, so we all started watching it. We chat about it every other day. Plus, we have a film club once a month where we all watch the same film and discuss it during lunch. I get along really well with my managers, so I don’t really worry about what they see. There’s never been an issue and I feel as though there’s a high level of trust.
Speaker 2 (female): I was talking to my boss, Jim, on the phone last week and he mentioned my cat. After the phone call, I realized that I’d never told him that I have a cat. He even knew her name – Missy. I’m quite close with one of my other colleagues, Samantha – and I was chatting to her on WhatsApp and she said that management can use our cameras to see what we’re doing which I didn’t know. They hadn’t said anything. I was really freaked out. I realized that Jim had been watching me via my camera which was really uncomfortable for me because I sometimes work in my pijamas. Plus, I’m a designer, so it’s not like there’s even anything to see that isn’t on my computer. Now I’ve put a post-it note over my webcam and I’m looking for other work. I feel really violated and angry. I think there are situations where monitoring your staff is OK, but they need to know if you’re watching them through a camera. If you give someone the power to watch someone without them knowing, I think a lot of people are going to take advantage of it in the wrong way.
