Students discuss different types of exercise before listening to a podcast about well-being. The language point is verb + -ing forms, focusing mainly on gerunds, but also including adjective and continuous verb forms. Students activate the target language in a pair-work speaking activity. There is also an optional extension activity in which students can try out some Zumba dance moves. (by Stephanie Hirschman)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Presenter: Hi everyone! Thanks for joining us on “Looking Good.” We usually discuss fashion, hair, and makeup, but in this podcast, we’re going to discuss well-being, and we have Amanda Little with us today. Amanda owns a chain of fitness studios, so she’s an expert in this area! Amanda, I want to start by asking you to define well-being.
Amanda: Sure. We hear a lot about well-being these days, and it simply means feeling healthy and happy. It’s very important for these two things to go together: you can’t really be healthy if you’re not happy. And to be healthy, we need to exercise.
Presenter: Yes. But I think many of us feel that exercise is something that we have to do, even if it’s boring or we don’t like it.
Amanda: That’s so true. What I say is: if you dislike exercising, then you should consider changing activities.
Presenter: OK, well, that’s me! Maybe you can give me some advice. I always avoid going to the gym. I try to go once a week, but really, I only go once a month.
Amanda: It sounds like you need a change! Many of the people that we work with enjoy exercising if they can be outside. Running is an activity that you can do in your local park. Or you might think about cycling.
Presenter: I used to use my bike to get to work. I miss cycling! And running sounds ok, if the weather’s nice. But what about if it’s raining? Or when it’s dark in the winter?
Amanda: In bad weather, you can still keep cycling - just go to a spin class! Or you can try a Zumba class. Zumba is a dance exercise routine with music – it’s a fun workout.
Presenter: And what type of exercise do you do?
Amanda: For me, swimming is the best way to keep fit and stay happy. I go swimming outdoors once a week, whatever the weather. Believe it or not, I actually look forward to swimming in the winter.
Presenter: I guess you’ve found the right exercise routine! And you look great!
Amanda: I always say, if you feel good, you look good.
Presenter: Thanks for your advice, Amanda.
Amanda: It’s a pleasure.
