ESL WORKSHEET - Describing changes

LESSON PLAN FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS
CHANGES

Jun. 30, 2025

Level: Pre-intermediate (A2-B1)
Type of language: General English
Tags: Society and Change; People and Places; Vocabulary and Grammar; Grammar Practice; Irregular Verbs; Past Tenses; Time Expressions; Present Perfect; 16-18 Years Old; 18+ Years Old
Publication date: 06/30/2025

This updated lesson plan focuses on the use of present perfect simple for describing changes, contrasts this form with past simple, and differentiates the use of for and since. It is assumed that students have encountered these points before but would benefit from revision. The lesson includes listening and speaking practice and there is also an optional extension activity offering practice in using present perfect simple to talk about line graphs. AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

James: Come on in, Aunt Nancy, and welcome! You’ve had such a long flight - would you like to lie down for a little while?
Nancy: No thanks, not yet. I’d rather say hi to everyone and look around.
James: Of course! Well, I’m sure you’ll notice that lots of things have changed. In fact, here’s Alex. Has he changed a lot?
Nancy: Yes, he certainly has! You’ve grown so much since my last visit - I can hardly recognize you. It’s lovely to see you again.
Alex: Hello, Aunt Nancy.
Nancy: And here’s Freya. Freya hasn’t changed a bit. Lovely to see you, dear. I hope you haven’t gone to a lot of trouble getting ready for me.
Freya: No, we haven’t – don’t worry! We’ve been so busy at work recently. A big order came in last week, so we haven’t had any time to clean the house. Sorry it looks so messy.
Nancy: It looks fine. In fact, this carpet looks new.
Freya: Yes, we’ve had it for around a year now. We decided to change it after we repainted the room in March.
Nancy: Well, it all looks beautiful. Now, what else have you done around here since my last visit? Let’s take a look at the kitchen...
