How long does it take to…?

Você quer saber como se diz quanto tempo leva para... em Inglês? Então, esta dica vai te ajudar. Leia o texto abaixo, postado originalmente em agosto de 2014 no blog Inglês na Ponta da Língua. Antes, confira o vídeo:


Para dizer quanto tempo leva para... em Inglês, basta usar a construção “how long does it take to…?”. Não é nada muito complicado. Para comprovar isso, veja os exemplos abaixo:
  • How long does it take to get there? (Quanto tempo leva para chegar lá?)
  • How long does it take to learn English? (Quanto tempo leva para aprender Inglês?)
  • How long does it take to get this ready? (Quanto tempo leva para deixar isso pronto?)
  • How long does it take to get back to normal? (Quanto tempo leva para voltar ao normal?)
Agora, caso você queira dizer “leva (tanto tempo) para…”, então é só dizer “it takes... to...”:
  • It takes 3 hours to get there.
  • It takes 15 minutes to do this.
  • It takes half an hour to get this ready.
  • It takes about 2 hours to do something like that.

No vídeo abaixo, você verá 5 frases que aprendemos nos livros didáticos e que não são muito usadas pelos norte-americanos no dia a dia. Mas calma: vamos só descrever o que acontece em uma variante do Inglês americano, na fala informal. Isso não significa que você deve parar de usar essas frases. Ao usá-las, você será totalmente compreendido, mas talvez soe um pouco formal demais.

5 frases que aprendemos nos livros e que não são muito usadas
pelos norte-americanos no dia a dia.

How do you do?
Esse é um cumprimento muito formal equivalente a How are you doing? Em Inglês americano informal, para perguntar “Como vai você?” prefira How are you? ou How is it going? e, ainda mais informalmente, What’s up?

May I go to the restroom?
Típica de livros, essa é uma forma perfeita e polida de pedir para ir ao banheiro. Mas no dia a dia, é possível que você escute outras formas simplificadas dela: Can I go to the bathroom? ou Can I use the restroom? Iniciar um pedido com May I...? soa mais formal e polido — e não há nada de errado com isso.

I am pleased to meet you.
Ao dizer que foi um prazer conhecer alguém, informalmente, você pode escutar Nice to meet you, ou Nice meeting you, ou ainda It’s good to meet you. Você já escutou essas diferentes formas?

The weather is nice today, isn’t it?
Não há nada de errado em puxar uma conversa com essa frase para dizer “O tempo está bom hoje, não é?” Informalmente, você pode ouvir Nice weather, huh? ou Beautiful day, isn’t it? que são perguntas mais curtas.

Whom e who
Os pronomes relativos who e whom são estruturas gramaticais cujas funções estão mudando no uso informal. O who tem susbstituido o whom ao longo dos anos e este acaba restrito a situações muito formais. Por exemplo, para dizer “A quem eu devo endereçar este e-mail/carta?” de forma correta e formal, devo usar To whom should I address this e-mail/letter? Para dizer a mesma frase de forma mais natural, a frase muda para Who should I address this e-mail/letter to? A preposição vai para o final da frase. Outros exemplos são Who should I send this to? Who are you talking with? Who should I speak to? Who are you going with?

Você sabe qual é a importância do ensino de Língua Inglesa nos anos finais do ensino fundamental? É importante compreender como isso pode ser aplicado efetivamente do sexto ao nono ano.
Nesse sentido, buscamos identificar caminhos que facilitem a aplicação das premissas desenhadas no Referencial Curricular: Anos Finais do Ensino Fundamental, por meio de um agrupamento estratégico dos conteúdos. Com ele, podemos fomentar explicações a respeito das características dos estudantes de cada ano, bem como as possibilidades de ensino do Inglês.
Neste artigo, você entenderá a importância do Inglês para esses jovens, qual é o perfil de cada ano e como deve ser a organização das matrizes curriculares.

Qual é a importância do Inglês no ensino fundamental?

Embora ainda não tenha caráter obrigatório nos anos iniciais, o aprendizado de Inglês no ensino fundamental contribui para a formação integral dos estudantes e constitui um dos direitos de aprendizagem. É preciso considerar a necessidade de uma educação voltada para a equidade, reconhecendo e enfrentando as dívidas do passado e atendendo às demandas contemporâneas.
O ensino da Língua Inglesa é justificado pela Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) como um componente curricular essencial na formação dos estudantes. Além da possibilidade do seu uso como lingua franca e de grande relevância no mundo contemporâneo.
A BNCC destaca que o aprendizado do Inglês possibilita o acesso a informações, conhecimentos e culturas de outros países, ampliando as possibilidades de inserção no mercado de trabalho. Além disso, ela enfatiza que o ensino da Língua Inglesa também é uma exigência da Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional.
No entanto, o ensino da Língua Inglesa também pode cumprir um papel importante no acesso a bens culturais materiais e imateriais que muitas vezes são reservados a classes privilegiadas, contribuindo para reduzir as desigualdades sociais.
Além disso, a perspectiva da educação integral acolhe as diversas dimensões dos aprendizes, incluindo sua formação cultural e social, possibilitando que os jovens compreendam mais o mundo que os cerca e tomem ciência das desigualdades e injustiças que constituem a sociedade.

Qual é o perfil dos estudantes dos anos finais do ensino fundamental?
A descrição dos estudantes é um desafio complexo diante da diversidade presente no país. É fundamental um olhar atento e respeitoso sobre suas culturas e práticas sociais.
A seguir, para facilitar o planejamento da aula de Inglês, veja as características e propostas a partir da perspectiva de aprendizagem para o ensino fundamental.

Sexto ano
No 6º ano, muitos estudantes têm seu primeiro contato com a Língua Inglesa, o que pode gerar ansiedade ou medo. É preciso acolher esses sentimentos para que se sintam confortáveis.
O currículo incentiva a reflexão sobre questões de língua e identidade, incluindo também elementos como:
  • organização social;
  • interação em Inglês;
  • aspectos interculturais;
  • percepção do território.
Nesse momento de mudança, os estudantes podem estar ingressando em novos grupos e desenvolvendo parcerias e afinidades.
Uma estratégia para a introdução de um idioma adicional é discutir a presença de diferentes línguas nas vivências e experiências dos estudantes.

Sétimo ano
No 7º ano, os estudantes estão mais familiarizados com as rotinas e demandas do novo ciclo, mas ainda podem apresentar ansiedade e medo ao aprender a Língua Inglesa.
Para aumentar sua capacidade de estabelecer relações complexas de causa e efeito, o currículo incentiva os alunos a explorar narrativas e a conexão entre saberes já consolidados.
Os alunos são incentivados a investigar pessoas da comunidade e a refletir sobre suas histórias e culturas juvenis. Além disso, é necessário abordar questões de gênero, raça e inclusão social.
Pode-se produzir atividades que ampliam o repertório dos alunos e os capacitam, como:
  • blogs;
  • vídeos;
  • infográficos;
  • trabalhos coletivos;
  • pôsteres informativos.

Oitavo ano
No 8º ano, os estudantes estão mais familiarizados com as rotinas escolares e podem ajudar colegas mais novos a se adaptarem.
O referencial propõe a temática “Língua e Cultura”, que convida os docentes a problematizar como diferentes línguas e culturas constroem os sujeitos dessa faixa etária.
Isso estimula os estudantes a investigar e relativizar outras culturas, bem como a desenvolver estratégias para lidar com diferenças culturais durante o contato com outras pessoas.
Interculturalidade é um conceito que se refere à interação entre diferentes culturas de forma igualitária, respeitosa e enriquecedora para todas as partes envolvidas. Por isso, esse debate pode começar, por exemplo, pelo tema “Food and Drink”, em que os estudantes exploram questões sobre alimentação em diferentes países. Vale ressaltar que o conceito de interculturalidade tem diversas interpretações.

Nono ano
Já no 9º ano, os alunos começam a se preparar para a continuação de suas jornadas, enxergando a Língua Inglesa como habilidade para redução de desigualdades.
Por meio de questionamentos, busca-se propiciar vivências e experiências que fomentem o olhar para além dos ambientes familiares.
Debates sobre história, tecnologias e sustentabilidade, sempre pautados pelo papel das responsabilidades pessoais para o desenvolvimento coletivo.
No contato com jovens de outras culturas e outros países, os estudantes dos anos finais do ensino fundamental podem identificar possibilidades e desafios da comunicação intercultural.

Como deve ser a organização das matrizes curriculares?

O Referencial Curricular para aulas de Língua Inglesa busca contemplar as características psicossociais e linguísticas do idioma como parte da formação integral e cidadã.
A matriz curricular é composta por componentes que visam lidar com a complexidade estudantil, sendo essencial considerar a importância das narrativas.
Professores podem estabelecer outras relações entre os elementos da matriz e as características de seus estudantes.
Atividades de vivência linguística mobilizam as habilidades de modo integrado. O paradigma da integração das habilidades faz um convite para um olhar multidimensional.
Os elementos da matriz visam lidar com a complexidade estudantil e são descritos em relação aos processos cognitivos. Há pluralidade de ações possíveis para uma reflexão profunda.
Em suma, a abordagem da Língua Inglesa nos anos finais do ensino fundamental é crucial para garantir o acesso a bens culturais e preparar os alunos para a continuação de suas jornadas pessoais.

Adrian: Today I am going to tell you about a quick and easy dish that tastes great.
You will need some onions, mushrooms, eggs, and tomatoes.
First, chop the mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions.
Then, fry the onions and mushrooms until they are light brown.
After that, mix the eggs and pour them into the frying pan with the mushrooms and onions.
Cook for two or three minutes.
Add the tomatoes.
Finally, fold the omelet in half and cook for one more minute.

Newsreader: Researchers have successfully created a cheesecake with a 3D printer, using cartridges of food paste and powder.
Newsreader: Seven different ingredients were used to print the cheesecake, including strawberry jam and peanut butter. The research team needed six attempts to make the dessert, with previous efforts resulting in a messy pile on the plate.
Newsreader: The team, from Columbia University, conducted the experiment in order to demonstrate the potential of 3D printed food. Chicken, beef, cheese and vegetables can also be produced.
Newsreader: The technology has existed since 2005 but hasn’t been widely used by food industries. Supporters of 3D printed food have suggested it could save time and reduce food waste, but there are also concerns that meals produced in this manner could be less nutritious.
Newsreader: The printed cheesecake may not look particularly tasty, but Jonathan Blutinger, one of the engineers who worked on the project said that he rather enjoyed the strange-looking dessert.
Newsreader: Possible real-world applications for 3D printed food include vending machines for astronauts on board space stations. The technology could also be used to reduce costs in large restaurants or fast-food diners.
Newsreader: Some businesses have already invested in food printing, such as Revo Food, an Australian start-up that produces plant-based alternatives to seafood. The company claim that their ‘salmon fillet’ is already available in 15 European countries.

In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills and expand their vocabulary in the context of describing their neighborhood. Students start by answering personalized questions to engage with the topic and then identify and practice familiar places and related adjectives in a variety of communicative activities. Students then hear the language in context by listening to two people being interviewed about their neighborhood. There is then a post-listening language focus and practice stage before finishing with a final productive task to consolidate and use all the language from the lesson (by Victoria Aitken).

Speaker 1: Where do you live?
Speaker 2: I live in Bandon, it’s a small town by the sea.
Speaker 1: Do you live in an apartment or a house?
Speaker 2: In a house.
Speaker 1: Who do you live with?
Speaker 2: I live with my parents and younger sister.
Speaker 1: What is your neighborhood like?
Speaker 2: It is friendly, everyone knows each other. It’s very safe and clean. It can be boring at times because there isn’t much to do.
Speaker 1: What amenities are there?
Speaker 2: There are some stores and there’s a restaurant, but it’s not open often. And there’s a small park. Unfortunately, there isn’t a movie theater or any other entertainment.
Speaker 1: Where do you live?
Speaker 3: I live in a big city. I live in Chicago.
Speaker 1: Do you live in an apartment or a house?
Speaker 3: I live in an apartment, on the tenth floor.
Speaker 1: Who do you live with?
Speaker 3: I live with my roommate.
Speaker 1: What is your neighborhood like?
Speaker 3: I don’t know many people, but my neighbors are friendly. It is busy and noisy because there are a lot of cars and buses. There are many blocks of apartments but there aren’t any houses.
Speaker 1: What amenities are there?
Speaker 3: There are a few restaurants and cafes and there’s a library. It’s my favorite place. I go three or four times a week.
