AUDIO/VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Presenter: A bite-sized introduction to the Treasure State: Montana, the history and the facts.
Montana was the 41st state to join the USA and in terms of population it is one of the smallest, just over one million people call Montana home. The state was given the catchy nickname of “Big Sky Country” due to the abundance of wide-open spaces and a skyline that stretches all the way to the horizon.
Geographically Montana is almost split down the middle in terms of terrain with the eastern part of the state being made up of the Great Plains and the west being home to the Rocky Mountains. This diversity creates wonderful areas for all kinds of wildlife to flourish. Some of the amazing creatures roaming wild include grizzly bears, grey wolves, and the graceful bald eagle.
Helena is the capital of Montana and originally began life as a gold camp during the gold rush of 1864. It was believed that by the time 1888 rolled around there were over 50 millionaires living in the surrounding area. These days this calm and peaceful city has a low crime rate and lots of open space making it a popular retirement location for many.
The history of the state goes back as far as almost any other state in the country with indigenous people living in the area for over 12,000 years. The oldest human burial site in North America was discovered here in 1968 and was found with artifacts seeming to be from Clovis culture.
Montana was also home to the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. The battle which is also commonly known as Custer’s Last Stand was a huge victory for the Native Americans over the US Army.
