AUDIO/VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Narrator: Born on February 12th, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States.
He was the president of the country during the American Civil War. He was a good and strong leader.
Because Lincoln respected people of all races, he wanted the whole country to also respect and treat them in an equal way.
At that time, there was a big slave market in the U.S.A., so he was fighting to give freedom to all slaves.
Lincoln was very good at discussing important problems and he won many debates about slavery.
He was a good lawyer and soon became famous all over the country. In 1860, Lincoln became President.
Many states did not agree with his idea of giving the same rights to everyone. They wanted to have slaves and to earn money, so seven states left the U.S.A to form a new country called the Confederacy.
That was the beginning of the American Civil War. It was very cruel. More than 600,000 Americans died.
Lincoln managed to keep the country together and in 1863, he signed a paper called the Emancipation Proclamation, which officially made slaves free.
Abraham Lincoln was also known for his height and the top hat that he often wore. He kept letters and important documents inside it.
He was married to Mary Todd and had 4 sons with her, but three of them died quite early. Because of that, he was depressed.
In 1865, he was shot by a famous actor at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C., and he died the next day.
He will be remembered as one of the greatest American presidents.
