This lesson will focus on Florida and the things that make the Sunshine State so special. Learners will be given the opportunity to learn all about the state, firstly with an audio section in which they will listen to someone’s trip to Miami and then an article that follows a journey from Daytona to Tampa Bay. Within the lesson, students will learn new vocabulary and then personalize it by talking about Florida and its similarities or differences with their own countries. The lesson also includes a homework task which looks at two extra texts about the state. (by Peter Clarkin)

AUDIO/VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Sarah: When I was at school so many of my friends seemed to go on vacation to Florida. Whether it was to Orlando, the Everglades or Disney World it didn’t matter it just made me desperate to go. Luckily last year I got a little bonus from work, so I jumped on a plane and in just over nine hours I was ready to see what the state had to offer.
As Mickey Mouse isn’t really my thing anymore, I decided to spend my precious free time in Miami because I wanted to let my hair down and I heard the magic city was the perfect place for that.
I started off in South Beach, which as a neighborhood has it all. The cool art-deco architecture, the exciting bars and plenty of cool spots to sit back and do some people-watching.
I had heard so much about Little Havana that I had to make it my next port of call. I’m quite an artsy person and I couldn’t get enough of the Latin American-inspired galleries and studios that were present in the neighborhood. I also love history so my visit to the Bay of Pigs Museum was a real eye-opener and left me with plenty of food for thought.
Over the years I have turned into a bit of a shopaholic and luckily, I could find everything that I wanted in this city. I took a trip to the high-end area of Bal Harbor as I had been told that this was the place to be. The area is known for its exclusive designer boutiques and the fact they are surrounded by a tropical garden just made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Luckily, I had to catch my plane home or else I could’ve ended up spending loads of money there.
