The topic of this lesson is changes students can make in their own schools and communities. Students read an article about how a 14-year-old brought together his whole school community to create positive change for all his classmates. Students learn level-appropriate vocabulary and move on to discuss changes they would like to make in their own schools and how they could do this. They will end the activities by taking part in an election for a school council. They will debate issues they feel passionate about and vote for a student president. At the end of the lesson, you will find a vocabulary review game that covers the words and phrases used in this unit. (by Richard Moon)

The topic of this lesson is robots and whether advances in technology and artificial intelligence are always a good thing. Students read an article about how robots are being successfully used in a number of different workplaces throughout the world and listen to two teenagers talking about the advantages and disadvantages of using robots in businesses. Students will learn level-appropriate vocabulary and take a look at the future perfect to talk about things in the future that happen at different times. They will also take part in a fun roleplay with a robot. In addition to this, there is an opportunity to write an essay about the advantages and disadvantages of more robots being used at home and at work or school. (by Richard Moon)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Ahmed: Hey, have you read this? It says that some robot superheroes are going to do a show at our park next month.
Brooklyn: Oh, no, I hate that type of thing.
Ahmed: Why? They’re amazing. Let me show you a video of a jump one of them can do! It’s so realistic! There are loads of clips on YouTube. Look at this.
Brooklyn: I suppose it does look cool. Maybe we should go. I just hope they don’t try to talk to me. I went to a museum a few weeks ago and there was a robot head there, all metal and plastic, except for the eyes. Those looked exactly like human eyes, and they moved as I moved. It was really weird and a bit scary.
Ahmed: Well, they can also make them look cute, too. Robots are here to stay – they’re going to make our world a better place.
Brooklyn: I’m really not sure about that. They can jump well and give you terrifying dreams but what else can they do?
Ahmed: They can chat with you and play games.
Brooklyn: Hey, robot! Do you want to play a game of tennis? No, thanks...
Ahmed: They can serve you in restaurants and hotels.
Brooklyn: Okay, that’s a more serious problem if you ask me. What happens to the jobs of all the people who work in services right now? Robots will just take them.
Ahmed: That is a good point, but that’s what happened in the industrial revolution, too. Machines saved people a lot of work. A farmer was able to do the work of ten men with a new tractor.
Brooklyn: Well, I’m sure that was great for the farmer, but what happened to those men and their families?
Ahmed: Hopefully they found different work, maybe more interesting work, too.
Brooklyn: Hmm. Maybe you’re right.
Ahmed: And people need to design and program the robots. Those are new jobs. This article I read mentioned a café where robots are controlled by people working from home, so that even helps people work when maybe they couldn’t before.
Brooklyn: I can see how that is a good thing, but I still think more people will lose their jobs, especially in areas like construction. If robots build everything, what do builders do?
Ahmed: Well, I'm not sure.
Brooklyn: And also, I know this is a bit like a science fiction story, but I am slightly concerned that robots will take over and take control of our lives, do you know what I mean?
Ahmed: I do know what you mean, but I don’t think we should worry about that. It’s not like Star Wars or The Matrix or something. Think how useful robots already are – they can clean for us, give us information, help us, entertain us.
Brooklyn: No, I understand that, but they’ll never be as creative as people, right? We create art, poetry, music, and literature. What robot could do that?
Ahmed: Well, you say that, but robots with AI have started creating art and writing novels…
Brooklyn: Really? Really? The next Shakespeare will be a robot? I’m not so sure about that.
Ahmed: You never know.

Busama (a girl): This is our music room. There are no chairs because in Thailand traditional musicians sit on the floor. Music is my favorite subject. I play the saw duang. It looks like a tall violin. I’m not good at sports or maths. I prefer reading and history. I have two younger brothers. I am thirteen years old, and they are only six and eight, so I am their big sister. In our school boys and girls wear the same uniforms. You can see them in the photo. Trousers are very comfortable, but I prefer to wear a dress when it is very hot. In Thailand it is hot all year and it rains a lot, especially in August and September. I don’t like rain.
Gatimu (a boy): In Kenya, the weather is very nice. It is never very hot or very cold. That’s why we don’t need to be inside a building all the time. I like school and our teacher. My favorite subject is English and computer science. We have a computer room, but the Internet is not very good. I love listening to birds and I like it when it rains. After school, I play football with my friends or help my father with the cows. We have to keep them safe from lions. I am the only son who lives in the village. My big brothers live in Nairobi and my sister lives in Sudan with her husband. She is 13 years older than me.

É usado principalmente com esportes onde se utilizam instrumentos (como tacos, bolas e petecas), na maioria dos casos em times, como basketball, cricket, soccer, tennis e volleyball, entre outros.

• I love to play basketball with my friends on weekends. (Eu adoro jogar basquete com meus amigos nos finais de semana.)
• He enjoys playing cricket in the park during the summer. (Ele gosta de jogar críquete no parque durante o verão.)
• They play soccer competitively for their school team. (Eles jogam futebol de forma competitiva pelo time da escola.)
• She plays tennis every Tuesday evening at the local club. (Ela joga tênis todas as terças à noite no clube local.)
• We played volleyball at the beach yesterday. (Nós jogamos vôlei na praia ontem.)

É usado com esportes frequentemente realizados em ambientes de treino e academias, principalmente os que enfatizam habilidades pessoais, artes marciais ou exercícios físicos que independem de instrumentos, como gymnastics, karate, kickboxing, weightlifing, wrestling, etc.

• She does gymnastics every Saturday morning at the community center. (Ela faz ginástica todos os sábados de manhã no centro comunitário.)
• He does karate three times a week at the local dojo*. (Ele pratica karatê três vezes por semana no dojo* local.)
• They do kickboxing for fitness and self-defense training. (Eles praticam kickboxing para condicionamento físico e treinamento de autodefesa.)

É usado com atividades que geralmente são feitas ao ar livre e/ou podem ser consideradas como uma experiência individual, além de pressupor um deslocamento, como hiking, climbing, skiing, surfing e swimming, entre outros.
Repare que o nome do esporte sempre terá a terminação -ing.

• I want to go hiking in the national park this spring. (Eu quero fazer uma caminhada no parque nacional nesta primavera.)
• We’re planning to go mountain climbing in the Alps next summer. (Estamos planejando ir escalar nas montanhas dos Alpes no próximo verão.)
• Let’s go skiing in the mountains next weekend. (Vamos esquiar nas montanhas no próximo final de semana.)
• They always go surfing whenever they visit the coast. (Eles sempre vão surfar sempre que visitam a costa.)
