AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Host: Hi, listeners! I’m Jon Howell, and I’m the host of today’s “This is your life” podcast. Today, I’m interviewing Penny Davies. She’s one hundred years old! Welcome to the show, Penny.
Penny: Thanks, Jon. I’m not one hundred years old though - I’m actually one hundred and one!
Host: Well, happy birthday! And sorry to get your age wrong. Now, Penny you were born in Wales, and your parents were farmers. But I think you moved to Manchester when you were a child. When did you move to the city? And why?
Penny: We moved when I was ten years old because my parents didn’t want me to miss out on a good education.
Host: Where did you study?
Penny: I studied at the Girls’ High School. I was a good student. But I didn’t finish high school.
Host: Why didn’t you finish high school? Did you need to go to work?
Penny: Yes, I needed to make some money to help the family. I started work when I was fifteen years old.
Host: Where did you start work?
Penny: At a shop that sold hats. But I didn’t stay there for very long.
Host: Why not?
Penny: Because I married my husband, Ron, and in the middle 20th century, most women didn’t work after they married.
Host: And I think you and Ron moved to the town of Perth in Scotland. Is that right?
Penny: No, we didn’t move to Perth in Scotland. We moved to Perth in Australia.
Host: Sorry, my mistake again. How long did you live in Perth?
Penny: We lived there until Ron died.
Host: When did Ron die?
Penny: He died in 1977. So I moved back to England. I didn’t want to stay in Australia without Ron.
Host: Penny, that’s so interesting, but we need to take a short break now. We’ll be back in a few minutes with more of Penny’s life story.
