AUDIO TRANSCRIPT
Syed: I’ve failed. I needed an IELTS 7.5 to get into the university I wanted, and I got a 7. It’s too late to retake the test in time for admission. I’m not going to get on to the medical course I wanted to get on to, and I’m not going to be able to study to be a surgeon. My parents are going to be really disappointed in me. I know I would have been really happy on that course. It covered everything I wanted to do, and now it’s all slipped away from me.
Julia: I hate this. My son is leaving home for university next week, and we’ve just found out my daughter is moving down south for her job. It won’t be the same without them being around with their friends. I loved our family meals together and when they had their friends over, but when are we going to be able to eat together again? It’s just me and my husband now, and he works all the time. It’s going to be very lonely and very quiet.
Tony: I loved my grandmother. She was so good to me and practically raised me as my parents both worked when I was growing up. She was always there when I got home from school with some orange soda and some chocolate cookies. We used to play Scrabble together and chat about what was happening in the world. She was such a light in my life, and now she’s passed away. I don’t think I will ever be happy again.
Elsa: Seriously? Could life be any worse? Within a week, I’ve lost my summer job because the shop owner is moving to another town, I just found out I failed my exams – I don’t even know what to do about that, and now my boyfriend has just finished with me. I think he wants to go out with that girl from his swim team and she’s so stupid! What did I do to deserve three awful things to happen to me in the same week? What is the point in even trying? I hate my life!
