THE AMERICAN COWBOY
The central character of America’s colorful ranching heritage is the cowboy. The American cowboy has played an important part in American culture and history. The cowboy influence is embedded in stories, songs, legends, movies, art and fashion.
Although the cowboy is generally considered an American icon, the traditional cowboy actually comes from a Hispanic tradition, which originated in Central Mexico, known as “charro.”
At the end of the Civil War, many soldiers had no home, and no place to go. They started drifting to the West. Cowboys roamed and worked throughout the Wild West. To many, this term means guns, cattle, horses and gunfights. It was a rugged country with few amenities and a lot of danger. The Western territories were appealing to the adventurous, and they were open and untamed. Many of these men only owned what they could carry on horseback. Ranchers hired these hard-working men as ranch hands. The ranch hands tended to the herd and did work around the ranch. When the time came to sell the beef, the ranch hands would round up the herd from the open prairie and drive the cattle miles to market.
Popular stories about the cowboys depicted them as rustlers or professional gunfighters. While this is true in some cases, the average American cowboy was often lonely, lived in harsh conditions, and was frequently exposed to danger. Despite this, the cowboys always kept their sense of humor and joked about everything. They did not make much money and enjoyed the simple way of life.
Tough as nails, but generous and hospitable, these were the true Wild West American cowboys. The cowboy was the embodiment of rugged independence. Some names you might be familiar with are Butch Cassidy and Th e Sundance Kid, Buff alo Bill, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.
Many of these cowboys became legends in real life and later legends of the silver screen. They rode horses. They sang songs. Their horses did tricks and their guns were shiny. They became American heroes.

Modern working cowboys
Being a cowboy is certainly not a thing of the past. Throughout the U.S., you will find cowboys working on ranches and farms. The exact number of working cowboys is unknown. Cowboys are responsible for feeding the livestock, branding cattle and horses, and tending to injuries. They also move the livestock to different pasture locations, or herd them into corrals. In addition, cowboys repair fences, maintain ranch equipment, and perform other odd jobs around the ranch.
And last, but not least: the cowgirl! The history of women in the west is not as well documented as that of men. However, in recent years companies have dedicated time and money to researching the cowgirl tradition. The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame has made great efforts to document the history of cowgirls.

TRADUÇÃO

O Cowboy Americano
Eles andavam a cavalo.

O National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame fez grandes esforços para documentar a história das cowgirls.

Cancel Culture: How Harmful is a Hashtag
The term “cancel culture” refers to a type of boycotting that takes place over social media networks. It involves publicly shaming or calling out an individual or company for offensive opinions or behavior.
If a harmful hashtag goes viral, it can destroy a public figure’s reputation, get an unknown person fired, or cause a business (big or small) to fail. Social shaming can also help raise awareness about social injustices and hold people accountable for their objectionable behavior despite their fame or power.
Do you know of any celebrities, politicians, or companies that have been “canceled” recently? The #MeToo hashtag transformed into a movement after several celebrities were called out for alleged sexual harassment in the workplace. Networks and executives in the TV and film industry began to cancel contracts with accused actors and directors. Likewise, media outlets and sponsors disassociated with shamed journalists and athletes.
Many public figures, business owners, and even artists feel threatened by cancel culture. Any wrong move (or word), past or future, could erase their credibility or at least force them into damage control. In an open letter published in Harper’s Magazine in July 2020, 153 authors, journalists, and other notable figures criticized cancel culture for constricting the free exchange of ideas and debate in favor of conformity.
The Harper’s letter received immediate backlash. Some of the signatories were accused of being immune to “canceling,” including Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling. The letter, which was published during global racial justice protests and a pandemic, also had questionable timing. In addition, some marginalized groups, including the transgender community, saw the letter as an act of silencing by society’s elite.
Is cancel culture a new form of activism that gives power to those who were previously unseen and unheard? Or should it be viewed as a form of cyberbullying that threatens the presumption of innocence and causes society to rush to judgment?

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

Narrator: The International Day of Happiness is organized by the United Nations in order to promote happiness as a human right.
The first one was on March 20th, 2013, when many events were organized, such as conferences, dances, and community workshops.
In this year, organizers arranged a 24-hour live-streaming of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, who is also a spokesperson for the day.
Since then, there have often been different themes to the day each year, for example, “the importance of relationships” and “the key to a good life”.
Recent research into happiness has shown that having a sense of purpose and positive social connections are the main causes of feelings of happiness.
Basically, people who are doing things for other people are more likely to be happier than people who are not.
And those happy people often have fewer health issues, such as high blood pressure and heart problems.
The event focuses on reducing global inequality, ending poverty, and protecting the planet for future generations.
