Students work with the topic of soup recipes to contextualize quantifiers with countable and uncountable nouns including some/any, a few/a little, (too) much/(too) many and enough/plenty. A brief explanation of this language point is provided as well as practice exercises and speaking and writing tasks. The optional extension allows students to revisit the original text as a listening exercise. (by Stephanie Hirschman)

Tomato Soup: Everyone’s Favorite
A can of tomato soup feeds two, but if you make it yourself, you’ll have plenty of soup for four people. With this recipe you’ll even have enough left over to take some to work the next day in a thermos.
You’re going to need an onion and a carrot. If you have some celery, that’s good too, but it’s fine if you don’t have any. Of course, you’re going to need lots of tomatoes – about 2 pounds are good. If you don’t have many fresh tomatoes, you can used canned ones, but the soup won’t be so good.
Chop the onion and carrot and fry them in olive oil. When they’re soft, add the tomatoes with some tomato puree and a little salt and pepper.
Then pour in 5 cups of chicken or vegetable stock and cook for 20 minutes. Use a hand blender to puree the soup and serve it with some good bread. And if you bought too much bread, you could always use it to make toast the next morning.
