Learning English takes time and patience. There are so many words, rules, and unique phrases. Some learners might find it hard to understand advanced sentences, pronunciation, and grammar. But, remember, learning slowly and methodically is actually good. It helps us really get the basics, which is important for your learning.
In this English lesson, Bob will encourage us to learn at a steady pace, and at the same time he’ll teach us 7 very common English sayings and phrases about this approach to a task. We’ll learn the meaning of the following sayings and phrases:
  • Slow and steady wins the race.
  • Cross your t's and dot you i's.
  • Haste makes waste!
  • Do it slowly but surely.
  • Rome wasn't built in a day.
  • Measure twice, cut once.
  • Good things come to those who wait.
Just remember, being patient is key. We’ll need to keep practicing, even when it feels hard. Being patient and practicing regularly will make learning English a good experience. 😉

Remember: Always watch the video three times. Twice today with English subtitles on, and once tomorrow with the English subtitles off. This will reinforce the English we have learned!

EXPRESSIONS FROM THE VIDEO

1. Slow and steady wins the race
Originated from the story “The tortoise and the hare”, this saying means that, when you do something slow and steady, you’re doing it carefully – about learning English, it means you’ll learn more and remember more.

2. Cross your t’s and dot you i’s
It means you have to go back and look at something you’ve written in particular, and make sure there are no spelling mistakes, the verbs are conjugated correctly – you do a thorough job, a careful work.

3. Haste makes waste
It means you should slow down, take it easy, just go slowly and carefully in order to do a good job (to learn English well).

4. Slowly but surely
When you do something slowly but surely, it means you don’t do it fast, and you do it with thought put into every step of the process: plan out your week, do a little bit every day, do everything each day with confidence and with purpose.

5. Rome wasn’t built in a day!
It means you see someone doing something really quickly and maybe not carefully, and you want them to take their time and do a good job – you can’t learn English in a week and/or in a month, you need to take time because you’re building something of great beauty and quality: your ability to speak English.

6. Measure twice, cut once!
It means you should be careful before you do something, so you reduce the chance that you’ll make a mistake – in English learning, when you’re doing a test or when your speaking or writing is being evaluated, make sure that you think before you speak or write.

7. Good things come to those who wait
If you are patient, if you work hard at something for a long time, eventually you will succeed.
