AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

At the age of 16, Saint Patrick was captured by pirates and brought to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but later returned to Ireland where he taught his Christian beliefs to others.
As he lived in the 5th Century, most of his life is legend and myth. Few records of the time survive. One of the most famous stories about his life is that he was responsible for forcing all of the snakes out of Ireland. However, snakes have never been native to Ireland, so this story is more likely to be a metaphor than reality.
History records his death on March 17th, which is now a public holiday in Ireland and, due to Irish migration, is celebrated around the world. The United States, home to millions of Irish descendants, famously holds St. Patrick’s Day parades in the cities of Boston, New York, and Chicago, among others. Indeed, it was in the state of Florida where the first-ever recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in 1601.
Nowadays, there are annual celebrations in countries as far away as Russia, Japan, Australia, and Argentina. Astronauts on the International Space Station have even sung Irish songs and worn green to mark the occasion.
