In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills by describing a favorite photo. To connect with the topic, the students first discuss some personalized, related questions. They then hear the language in context and complete pre, during, and post-listening tasks based on three descriptions of a favorite photo. The students then focus on and practice useful language to describe a photo in a variety of activities before planning and delivering their own responses. The lesson finishes with a student-centered speaking game to develop fluency and review the language content. (by Victoria Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPTS

AUDIO 1 (Task 3)
Woman 1: This is an old photo of my university friends and I waiting to go to a festival. That’s me on the right, and my best friend Suzi is next to me. You can’t see his face clearly, but that’s Scott behind me, and Suzi is in front of James. And that’s Ken on the left. I remember we were all so excited and clean. We had so much fun that weekend. We danced, laughed, and got very muddy as it rained, but we didn’t care. This is one of my favorite photos as it reminds me of the carefree life I had when I was a student.
Man: I love this photo! It is a picture of my grandad, Bob, and my furry friends sitting on the bench in my garden. As you can see, they like my grandad a lot. Benjy the dog, in the middle, is always trying to lick his face and give him hugs. Ned, is on the left, just watching patiently waiting for his turn. Even my cat Tiger likes hanging out with him which is unusual because she doesn’t really like to be near people. Sadly my grandfather passed away a few years ago so whenever I am missing him, I look at the picture and it always makes me smile.
Woman 2: This is a picture of the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal just before I started an eight-day trek. I wanted to do something that challenged me. In the photo, you can see me in front of our tents getting ready with the impressive mountain range behind and the blue sunny sky above. The scenery on the trek was beautiful and changed every day. On day five, we got up very early to climb the peak. We reached 26,545 feet just as the sun came up and saw the view from the top. When I look at the photo it makes me feel proud that I completed the trek successfully and experienced something so amazing.

AUDIO 2 (Task 5)
Picture one
Woman: This is our wedding day. We wanted to get married on the beach, so the ceremony was near the ocean. That’s me next to my husband and we are standing in front of our wonderful friends and family. I am holding my bouquet above my head ready to throw it behind me. My sister caught it. I love how this photo captures the moment.
Picture two
Man: This is a picture of the Amalfi coast in Italy. I went there last year with my best friend. I think it is a really beautiful photo with vibrant colors. You can see the town on the left and the mountains in the background. You can see the sea in the middle with lots of little boats. And then you have the pretty pink flowers at the bottom, on the right.
