In this updated lesson plan, students review several uses of the present perfect simple: for recent events with present results, for life experiences, and for past events without specific time references as well as the use of words like ever, never, just, already, yet and for/since. It is assumed that students have studied this content previously. The lesson topic is how winning the lottery has changed people’s lives. and students practice listening and speaking - they can use dice to select options for an interview activity. There is also an optional extension bingo game to review irregular past participles. (by Stephanie Hirschman)

INTERVIEW 1
Interviewer: Tell me what happened when you won the lottery.
Woman: Well, every week I check the winning number against my ticket, and this time, they matched. I thought, “I’ve won the top prize!” I felt quite calm, actually.
Interviewer: How has winning this money changed your life?
Woman: Well, I’m going to try a new hobby. I’ve just bought a horse so my daughter and I can learn to ride.
Interviewer: Have you ever done anything like that before?
Woman: No, never. But I’ve been interested in horse riding since 2010 when I saw the events in the Olympics.
Interviewer: Has your daughter heard about the horse?
Woman: No, I haven’t told her about the horse yet. I’ll tell her next week. She’ll be so excited – she’s wanted a horse for a long time.
INTERVIEW 2
Interviewer: So, you’ve just become a millionaire! What effect has this win had on your day-to-day life?
Man: Actually, it hasn’t had much effect at all. I’ve decided to stay in my job. I’ve worked at the same place for thirty years, since the 1990s, and I like it there.
Interviewer: Really? I can’t believe that you’ve never dreamed of retiring early.
Man: Of course, I have – everyone has. But when I thought about it, I realized that I don’t know what I’d do with my time if I gave up work. Last year, I didn’t even take all my vacation time because I thought it would be boring.
Interviewer: Have you made any plans for the money yet?
Man: No, I haven’t, not really. I might give some of it away to friends and family. My sister had some really big bills last week, and I’ve already told her I’ll help her pay them.
