In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills by talking about what people do in the context of jobs and study. To engage with the topic, they first match what three people do before identifying and practicing a set of common jobs in a variety of student-centered speaking activities. The students then develop their listening skills with three short descriptions before highlighting useful language to describe different jobs and what they involve. They then consolidate and practice the language in a descriptive communicative task. The lesson finishes with a game to review the lesson. (by Victoria Aitken)

AUDIO TRANSCRIPT

James: I’m James. I wear a uniform for my job. I go to the airport to get the airplane ready. I love my job because I fly to many different countries.
Sue: My name is Sue. I work in a school. I don’t wear a uniform. I have thirty students in my class. They are all nine or ten years old. I work five days a week, but I do get long vacations.
Fred: My name is Fred, and I work in a shopping mall. I wear a uniform at work. A red shirt, a red sweater, and a pair of black jeans. I help customers when they want to buy something. I don’t like my job because I stand on my feet all day and it is boring.
