In this lesson, students develop their conversational skills to talk about everyday objects in the context of losing items. Students start by matching common everyday items, identifying the use of indefinite articles with those items and noticing the different sounds for plural endings. They then complete a variety of communicative activities to practice and personalize the language. Students then listen to two different audios about lost belongings to hear the language in context and complete comprehension tasks. They finish with a final productive task to consolidate all the language from the lesson and there is an optional describing game to review the vocabulary (by Victoria Aitken).

Audio 1

Presenter: Are you always losing things? What do you lose? We asked one hundred people and here are the top five lost items.
At number five, headphones. At number four, wallets, or purses. At number three, keys. At number two, IDs. And the item that people lose the most is, you guessed it, phones.
Let's listen to three people talk about their stories of losing things.

  • Andrew
Presenter: Andrew, do you often lose things?
Andrew: Yes, often, especially my keys and debit cards.
Presenter: What was the last thing you lost?
Andrew: Last week I lost my ID.
Presenter: How did you feel?
Andrew: I was annoyed because I had to get a new one.
  • Betty
Presenter: Betty, do you often lose things?
Betty: Sometimes, I try to be careful.
Presenter: What was the last thing you lost?
Betty: I lost my phone last month, but I found it. It was under my bed.
Presenter: How did you feel?
Betty: I was so happy to find it.
  • Gary
Presenter: And Gary. Do you often lose things?
Gary: Yes, I always lose things.
Presenter: What was the last thing you lost?
Gary: I lost my wallet in the park and never found it.
Presenter: How did you feel?
Gary: I was very sad because it had fifty dollars in it and some photographs.
