Today we’re going to show you a few tricks we found that will help you carve your best jack-o’-lantern, and let you keep it around for a while without it turning into a green furry mess.
Step 1 Picking a pumpkin. Make sure to find a nice firm pumpkin. Turn the pumpkin over and place pressure on the bottom center. Never carry a pumpkin by its stem - it could break off. If it gives, the pumpkin is not fresh. Turn the pumpkin on its side and mark a circle around the bottom center. You can do this by rotating a pencil and marking as you go. Cutting the opening on the bottom helps the pumpkin keep its shape when it starts to age.
Step 2 Cleaning. An ice cream scoop is perfect for gutting your pumpkin. The edge of the metal scoop is great for cleaning the walls. The edge will make for super-fast cleaning. Once you have finished with the dirty work, it’s time to have some fun.
Step 3 Marking. Rotate your pumpkin until you find the right side to make your creation. Whether you use a stencil or go with your own design, put your own mark on it. If you’re using a stencil, there is the nail method. After the stencil comes off, you will have a trail of nail holes to follow as you cut. You can make following the lines a little easier by rubbing flour into the holes.
Step 4 Carving. Nothing beats a good old pumpkin cutter. The soft serrated blade works so well on a pumpkin. Make sure to cut on the outside of your drawn line to not leave any marks in the pumpkin.
Now that your design is cut, let’s start the preserving process by soaking your pumpkin in water for two to three hours. Soak your pumpkin in water for 2-3 hours. After your pumpkin has dried, rub petroleum jelly all over the inside and the cut edges of your pumpkin. This will help lock in the moisture. In a spray bottle, mix a few drops of bleach with water. Use this daily to spray on the inside and the cut edges to ward off mold and bacteria. You can also use lemon and vinegar. 1 tsp of lemon juice / use 2 tbsp of vinegar.
If you plan on using a real candle, you can sprinkle pumpkin pie spices on the inside roof of the pumpkin. When the candle burns, the scent of pumpkin pie will
Light and enjoy. Now your jack-o’-lantern is ready for its debut. Hopefully, the tips we have given here will help you prolong the life of your hard work enough to make it through the entire season.
