This lesson will look at traveling in Ghana. Learners will be given the opportunity to learn all about Ghana, with an audio section focusing on a December trip to the country. The article looks at the fact that Ghana is known as “Africa for beginners” and whether this is true. Within the lesson, students will learn new vocabulary and then personalize it by talking about Ghana and its similarities or differences with their own countries (by Peter Clarkin).

Speaker: I really want to tell you about my trip to Ghana last year and the things that I experienced while I was there. I had often dreamt about going to western Africa and I made Ghana my country of choice for a lot of reasons.
I traveled to Ghana in December which is perhaps the best time to go due to the huge number of festivals, parties and events held at that time of year. I was desperate to go to Afrochella, a festival celebrating Africa’s diverse culture and it was a real thrill for me to attend. The time I spent in the capital Accra was also so cool. I spent some time at the National Museum and then ran straight to Makola Market to stock up on a few good bargains.
After a few days in Accra, I took the quick 40 min flight to Kumasi, the second city. I have always been intrigued by traditional Ashanti culture and Kumasi was the perfect location for that. I made my first stop Manhyia Palace, as that was home of the Royal family up until 1975 and has now been transformed into a really informative museum. I was also thrilled to catch a glimpse of traditional Ashanti dress as it bursts with vibrant color and has a style all of its own.
Throughout my entire trip I fueled myself on the delicious Ghanian food that was available. I highly recommend that if you get a chance to try out some jollof rice then you need to go for it, try washing it down with a glass of lamugin, a flavorful, chilled ginger drink.
